After three days of emotional deliberations, personal and professional discussions with family members and close associates which tore Nick Saban in two directions, the Miami Dolphins have a new head coach.

Saban decided Saturday to leave his comfort zone at LSU, a university for which he has great respect and fondness, and accept the task of rebuilding the Dolphins organization. The decision came after long Thursday and Friday sessions at his home in Baton Rouge, where he weighed his future with his wife, Terry, and his agent, Jimmy Sexton.

"We've never ever taken over successful programs," said Saban, who announced his decision, after apprising university officials and his players of it, at an evening news conference in Orlando on Saturday. "We've taken challenges that were difficult, worked hard and had an effect in a positive way. That's one of the reasons I feel I can be successful in this challenge."

At no time, sources said, did LSU attempt to significantly augment Saban's contract. Two sources said that, at the outset of the process with Miami, school officials told Saban and Sexton how far they could go financially. There was never a formal counteroffer in an attempt to keep him in Baton Rouge.

Dug this story up because I have never really looked into the circumstances of how Coach Saban left LSU (just wasn't that big of a deal to me when it happened - I was recently back from Afghanistan and was putting my life back together when it all went down). However about a month ago someone posted on here (sorry, don't remember who) the story of how Alabama landed him (almost Rich Rodriguez, etc) and it got me thinking about the timeline.

Anyway, this will not end the bickering about him. Just thought it was interesting how this current dynasty at Alabama began in the most unusual way. Very similar to Coach Bryant and Kentucky and A&M.

This isn't true. There was never a new contract drawn up, but Bertman was in the room with Saban as Miami unloaded the Brinks truck for him. Skip offered more money and the full backing of the AD offices, but he knew he was never going to retain Saban. He tried, which is more than our current AD would have done.

So in your opinion it was all about the money for Saban? Or control? Or both? Or he just had to scratch that NFL itch one more time?

He was going no matter what. Skip said that Saban balked at the NFL a few times previously and was worried another chance might not open up. So skip had a coach wanting to make the jump and an NFL owner giving him way more money than LSU could compete with. Saban was leaving--the article incorrectly states that LSU didn't try to keep Saban and incorrectly implies that LSU might have been able to keep him in Baton Rouge.

Well, he turned down the Bears the previous year over (reportedly) control issues. So that is a part of it. And his salary was (at least) doubled by the Dolphins so there was no way LSU was going to match it (even if they made an attempt). I think it comes down to needing to "itch that scratch" and give the NFL a shot as a HC. See if he measured up on the big stage. And also the money (a nice bonus). It was our misfortune that his one issue (control) caused (apparently) a rift with the Dolphin ownership (he was not permitted to sign recently released Drew Brees - the team signed Daunte Culpepper instead). And Bama was in need of a head coach at the exact same time. Just the way it worked out.

My two cents.

I know this is gossip, but I heard Terry was a reason he left. Something about womanizing

He was bound for the he NFL ... had a natty and wanted to see what it's like ... I don't know enough about the NFL to know how often coaches clash with their gm, tho I assume most want that power ...

Apparently it was kept good enough.

Seriously, I find it funny that someone who is as borderline autistic/OCD as CNS would have time for a mistress not named football. I realize links may be hard (maybe impossible) to come by now, but I would love to see something about him from that time period.

I know the Doctor Candy is married to currently in BR now. Wish I hadn't lost touch with him I'd love to have the guts to ask him what she told him about that rumor and if he believes she was honest about it with him.

Yeap, one and the same. Actually I see her advertising for her Real Estate services on those electronic billboards around BR all the time. If you happen to see it she added the doctors last name so for those who recognize her pic it may connect some dots for those who are well connected around town and I'll just leave it at that.

Will have to look for the billboards next time I am in town. My mom still lives out in Broadmoor.

I'm constantly amazed at how Saban has successfully revised history to make it seem like he wanted Brees and not Culpepper. Nick had absolute control and there is no way he would have been forced to take Culpepper over Brees. The simple fact was there were significant questions as to whether Brees would ever be the QB he was due to the severe shoulder injury he suffered. Nick chose Culpepper and the rest is history.

As I am slowly peeling back the layers on this, the consistent theme is he is a liar.

Great coach.

But a liar.

I think every coach lies on a consistent basis. More to the point here, they have a difficult time ever admitting they were at fault. Saban is definitely no exception.
