Does Kevin Sumlin and aTm share any responsibility for Manziel's problems?

quote:

If Johnny Manziel doesn't receive help, he won't make it to his next birthday, his father told The Dallas Morning News on Friday.

Manziel's father, Paul, told the newspaper that the Cleveland Browns quarterback has refused to enter area rehab facilities twice in the past week. He said the family tried to get Manziel, 23, to enter a local addiction facility on Saturday, but Manziel refused to stay. Paul Manziel said he tried to have his son admitted to a psychiatric and chemical dependency hospital on Tuesday, but Manziel was allowed to leave, despite his father telling officers that he believed Manziel was suicidal.

Ultimately Johnny is responsible for Johnny. But the place that made him an entitled, drug and alcohol addicted, attention whore is Texas A&M. He repeatedly did things that elevated himself and his personal life above the team. And rather than Sumlin teaching him a lesson and benching him, Sumlin and aTm seemed to fuel him even more. They promoted the "Johnny Football" persona as the face of the "new" aTm program and taught him that no matter what he did, Sumlin and aTm were still going to put him on the football field. Sumlin has been the biggest enabler in his life instead of the tough father figure we expect a coach of 18-22 year olds to be.

No.

In hindsight, it's actually incredible that they kept him from completely self-destructing in the scant time he was on campus.

Uh, no.

We gave him a chance as a three star QB to start on a SEC team and then supported him with the perfect media campaign on his way to a Heisman.

His problems are his problems.

Sigh...

We're talking about a 23 year old adult. No person, school, or any other entity is responsible for his actions other than himself. Period.

Umm no.

He's a grown man fricking his own life up. If anyone is to blame it's himself and his parents for poorly raising him

Does anyone else feel like this whole Johnny thing is ridiculous and blown way out of proportion?

It's getting old.

That kid has had those problems long before he hit CS.

Don't worry we will retire that saying eventually.

Sometime next offseason.

any responsibility
"Any" is pretty broad. Without knowing how he was coached, disciplined, held accountable or enabled behind closed doors, I don't think anyone can answer this question. Clearly Johnny is ultimately responsible for himself, as you said, and his parents appear substantially responsible as well.

I just keep getting the feeling that he's just a dumb rich 23 year old who has no one to tell him "that's a bad idea". Serious issues? I don't know. The quote from his dad strikes me more as him trying to get attention. Seems like an exaggeration

Responsible? No.

Could they have done anything differently which may have helped? Probably.

Unless you have known Johnny for his entire life, how can you possibly make a claim like this?

His dad is part of the problem. That kid was allowed to do whatever he wanted way before he got to the NFL and even before A&M. There were all kind of stories of Manziel acting like a little bitch with grandpa's money.

I mean, it's not like we have another high-profile Aggie football alum playing for a Super Bowl right now

Just like last year.

And the year before that.

Where were OP's threads praising TAMU's role in molding those young men, I wonder?
