Does defense truly win championships?

I was having an argument with a B10 friend of mine and I was saying how SEC defenses are usually the best in the country and that in today's football culture, having a dominant defense can really bring you a title. My friend then went on to explain how Oregon this and B10 schools that, and that offense wins you cfb championships these days. But I'm still a firm believer that perrenial big defenses like Bama, LSU, UGA, Auburn, are really built for championship teams. And for the Aggies on here, with Chavis, y'all could be considered in there with some more improvement as well, no flame intended.

Oregon has yet to win a title, and has scored 20 points or fewer each time they've played for one. Not sure how they would enter in to any argument like this.

Tell your friend to sit on a cactus.

Oregon is the perfect example of how offense doesn't win championships.

Yes. Ohio State's defense was damn good at the end of last year

Defense seems like a more consistent way of winning ball games but offense sells tickets. The truth is that you need an offense to put up 35 to 40 points a game to win consistently now though.
I would compare it to the golf saying of drive for show and putt for dough. Brad Faxon and Ben Crenshaw were boring as shite to watch play but being amazing putters won them a lot of money. At the end of the day, Tiger could poke the ball about 325 off the tee and won a lot more.

Same Oregon that got its shite pushed by Utah last week? I bet they wished they had some good SEC defense.

100 % agree. Look at the past champions. The worst defense was probably 2010 Auburn, and they weren't too bad,

I can tell you that "no defense" doesn't win them.

The big 12 has an entire conference built around offense and they haven't won shite. It's boring to me to watch 2 teams that can't stop each other from scoring.

Yes they do, offense is pretty but they very rarely pan out in the end. You cant have zero offense but you can have less offense with a great D. you cant have no D and a just a great offense. You'll have weather, field conditions, inexperience at QB, etc that can affect offense. D can always just play. Texas Tech, Oregon, Baylor usually have the best offenses and will be in a good bowl, not THE bowl.

Elite Defense > Elite Offense. Though, I think having elite special teams should also be factored into that elite defense. If you put your offense in good starting position, it doesn't have to be elite to put points on the board.

I have some surprising data on this. It turns out that each time a defense is on the field there is also one offense on the field. The science points to the fact that how the defense and offense do against each other is a good predicter of victory.

LSU has tried for years to win a championship with no offense. Will let you know when it works.
Great defense > great offense, but it still takes a decent offense or at least good special teams.

The biggest benefit for an offense like Oregon, Baylor, etc. is that teams normally only have one week to prepare for them. There is no way to be ready for everything they can throw at you in 4 days of practice. But give a talented team with good coaches 3 or 4 weeks to figure it out and coach their players up, and you take away their advantage.

Oh, that 2010 AU defense was not good at all
They're the only team I can remember in a long while to win a title without a good defense.
AU in 2010 gave up....
26 pts to Arkansas State
27 pts to South Carolina
34 pts to Kentucky
43 pts to Arkansas
31 pts to Ole Miss
31 pts to Georgia
27 pts to Alabama
Gave up an average of over 24 ppg in 2010

I think it takes a combo of one great unit and one good unit. It can be a great defense and good offense or vice versa. Two goods or one great and one terrible won't cut it.

Balance wins championships. Having a great defense doesn't help if your offense blows. Otherwise WM would have won one at UF.
