Saban said it best several years back talking about the no-huddle RPO offense - "Is this what we want cfb to be?"

I'll be completely honest - I hate the new offense in cfb. Every single team runs the exact same system - shotgun almost every snap, option offense, goofy picture cards on the sideline. Not to mention the no-huddle. Most teams now would rather have a QB that can run a 4.4 than one that can throw a forward pass.
Aside from the linemen, it seems like every single player on the field is the same exact body type: 6'1" 220 - runs a 4.4-4.5.

I think that the cfb rules have been exploited to the point of ruining the game, and it won't be long until the NFL is also ruined by this.
I wish that college would go back to looking more like the pro game, and it might be as simple as changing the linemen blocking downfield rule.

I miss the days of seeing slow QBs with incredible throwing ability

What do you think?

The spread offense doesn't bother me but I could live without the uptempo nonsense.

There have been fast running/passing QBs for decades before there was ever a spread offense.

We can only take what the high schools are giving us. They all run spread or T-wing offense. plus all of those goofy cards are used to help players with play calling, most kids aren't ready to just step in and call plays. I don't see things changing very soon so whether you like it or not, this is what cfb is now.

I hate it! I love the double tight end and loaded backfield of the 90's. This spread offense is for pussies.

It's weird to me that LBs QBs WRs and DBs are virtually indistinguishable in body type and athleticism

It's probably a lot easier to recruit and teach O-lines to strickly pass block.

It is all cyclical. It will revert back in due time. Right now that is the number one way that you give an offense advantage over the defense. Something has to shift back into the defenses favor at some point.

I wish the NCAA would do like NFL and change the rule about linemen blocking downfield and move it back to one yard downfield like the NFL. I think that will tilt the table back in defense's favor and offenses will change.

Agree. I fricking hate the new college football. Give me the 2012 Bama philosophy over the shite we call an offense nowadays. Maybe my problem isn't with Hurts. It may just be I am stubborn as frick and hate that Saban bailed on the old school way of playing offense. Hurts is a great fit for the rpo and read option offense. I just hate it.

Exactly. It may be cyclical, but this only exists because of coaches exploiting the college rule of linemen blocking downfield, as well as the no-huddle preventing defenses from subbing.
Neither of these rules exist in the NFL, and these are the two rules the college game is completely founded on now.

This is what I realized as well.

I think you are crying like Nick Saban...There is a style of football that has evolved that can beat his style given the right talent level and coaching...Saban can no longer recruit the best 400 pound linemen that can out-muscle the other side of the ball because this big guys can't run 15 yards without sucking wind. HUNH teams are developing athlehes that are strong and can actually run 100 plays without dropping dead.

If I was a Alabama fan I would be crying to change the rules as well...Until Saban retires and the next HC wants to move to a HUNH style and everything will be fine.

Like the coot fan said...whatever it takes to win as long as it is legal.....instead of changing the rules, learn to beat it.

I really don't like other things besides the spread option stuff you talked about.

Stuff I hate:

1) Megaconferences. South Carolina would never have been in the SEC without them coming into existence, but us having Texas A&M as a permanent opponent is nutty.

Most of our students will never go to a game there. We have no history or geography with them. I get get a hate on thinking about Georgia pretty easily, but have no reaction to A&M whatsoever.

2) I've actually come to prefer the old system where we argued about who was the best over this playoff or BCS stuff.

3) Really tired of seeing whatever school build the latest brick sh*thouse for recruiting purposes. Oregon's disco locker room or any of a number of "academic centers" different teams have built. Come on, a tutoring system is one thing. You really think some place with computer terminal and audiovisual equipment is better than the campus library?

4) This recruiting centric new era. Personally I think Saban kicked it off with his plethora of non-coaching assistants devoted to sending birthday cards to 14 year olds four states over that Alabama MIGHT possibly recruit one day.

5) Increasing ticket prices. I miss the old days and game atmosphere more. Hard to define the difference but when they started adding all these fees and upping prices things changed somehow. South Carolina has a pretty good fan base, but I actually think we had more people back in the days of absolute futility.

Really the only positive I can think of now, is the fact that I can watch pretty much any game I want to now over the internet. Otherwise I think the 80's was a better college football era.

Come on, don't you guys remember flipping between games and saying if Nebraska beats so and so in the Orange Bowl, and Pitt beats Alabama in the Sugar, then the winner of the Cotton will be the champion?

Yes Saban is struggling so much in the modern game. He has a whole 4 losses in the past 3 seasons.

They keep making it harder and harder to cover people because of the rules. NFL is basically a passing league now because of it.

I like offensive production. It's also more exciting to watch a good D shut down a productive offense than it is to watch them shut down a slow rolling yardage and/or clock eater.

I hate what college football has become, but not as it pertains to on the field stuff. I hate how it has become NFL-lite with $8 million dollar coaches salaries and the increased separation between the players on the team and the university as an institution of learning and as a community, to the point where it is nearly a team in the town that wears the schools logo but is otherwise unassociated with the university. Also, the sensationalized coverage of the sport wears on me.

As far as spread offenses, HUNH, and fast QBs go, that has existed forever. Although, I have noticed that it seems like the average game score through these first two weeks have been lower, but I have no real stats to back up that claim.
