Or just a consistent good football team like a Wisconsin/TCU type. They haven't won the Sec West in several years. They lose 2 or 3 games each year since "Da rematch" happened it seems. I'm not trying to flame by no means, but when is the last time has LSU won a Big time bowl game? LSU Posters on here always want to give themselves the benefits of doubt when they chit on other Ranters' programs for using the same reasonings, excuses and moral victories posted by themselves.

When's the last time Wisconsin or TCU won a national championship? When's the last time they played for one?

Consistently good football team. Primarily due to a very fertile recruiting base (which is why CLM won). With the right coaching, it could approach elite.

They have the infrastructure in place to always be at least a Top 15 team. Fan support, facilities, recruiting base. Barring a total buffoon being hired as head coach, they're here to stay.

I never did. They had a run there 2003-11 where they could play with anybody most years but even Oregon, Baylor, etc have had runs. Over their history they haven't put it together for sustained period nor have they been elite multiple times with multiple coaches which is where elite programs seperate themselves. They have elite teams every now and then but the program is not elite.

LSu is a good program, solid program and always has been but they are not a blueblood and not what most would consider an "elite" program. I think of baseball when i think of them. They pretty good at that shite.

Consistently good team that has not quite been able to take the next step since 2011, but clearly has the potential to quickly jump back into the "elite" conversation.

LSU has done this post-2011 (considered a "failure):
10-3 (#12)
10-3 (#14)
8-5 (UR)
9-3 (#17)
6-3 (#16)

LSU has literally been a Greg McElroy and a balanced offensive gameplan away from being a Top 5-10 team for 2 years now. They are clearly the program that has the closest and quickest path to being elite again in the SEC.

Elite teams don't lose 3 or more games a year every year for five years straight.

2nd Tier Team sort of like Wisconsin. LSU hasn't done anything since 2011.

The right coaching hire could flip that however. Their defense is stellar. No doubt they have players. Whoever LSU admins. hire Orgeron or whoever, the question they need to focus on is how that coach plans to get some offensive production to match the defense. If they can do that, they will get back to being a contender.

Yep - their best bet is finding a guy who has shown he can find ways to take a mediocre QB and play to his strengths as well as develop a young QB, all while still running a program that encourages great defense.

I mean, I don't know, like maybe.......

But more realistically
