Do the troubles at ESPN bother anyone else?

I admit that my school has been as guilty as anyone when it comes to throwing around SEC Network money. We took our first big check and promptly ordered a hugely over-the-top baseball facility.

Should SEC schools be overly concerned about the forecasts that say ESPN is going belly up? That sweet, sweet SEC Network money is gonna dry up and a lot of us have become addicted to it

No. College athletics getting less money doesn't bother me.

Yes, I do think it should concern the schools.

At the very least, when the contract runs out, the next contract will likely not be anywhere near as lucrative, unless something major changes within the industry.

How about getting significantly less money?

Keep an eye on Nascar , now that Monster has replaced Sprint and their $75 million/year endorsement

That is just absurd. They should just show less NBA games if they're going to get charged that much.

I hope ESPN goes bankrupt. They have lost their way and another company would take over college sports.

I'm not worried cause if ESPN went belly up then the SEC will just be able to go to another network and command a decent amount to keep the riches flowing.

The SEC is still the premier football conference and will make sure it gets its fair share.

They're riding their political ship straight down the drain. Nobody wants activism mixed with their sports, that's where we have traditionally gone to escape the shite and find a common connection. The SEC will be just fine with or without ESPN.

True, but will another network overbid against themselves like ESPN has done?

If ESPN can't pay what makes you think other networks will be able to sustain the model?

The model is simply unsustainable. It will hit professional sports the hardest, but eventually those entities will have to bring their costs to broadcast in line with what networks are able to command from service providers which is dropping as we speak and shows no signs of slowing.

People are starting to drive how television content is delivered to them and it is having massive consequences across the board.

I saw where Ryan Rusillo was quoted as saying that he doesn't even know what his job is half the time. Seems like everybody on the air is there to make a political statement, not talk sports

Yes but we can't get overextended, counting on Network $ that looks like it may dissappear

This is exactly why I've stopped watching anything but games on ESPN. I'll go to a news channel if I want political beliefs shoved down my throat. I'm just there to hear about YAC and the Packers record at home in sub-freezing games during the last two weeks of December.

I brought this up last year (I'll try to find the thread) and was assured, by most on tSECr, that this was nothing more than a hiccup, a bump in the road, on ESPN's way toward their new business model of servicing the cord cutters and becoming more actively involved in politics.

But to answer your question, no, ESPN's troubles do not bother me ... they'll get what they deserve now that they've doubled-down on their political agenda.

My advice to SEC ADs would be to upgrade everything before the current deal expires - be debt free as quickly as possible. It should be doable. Do not depend upon the ESPN money after 2021. It may still be here but it may not.

The SEC Network money, (via ESPN), seems pretty secure for the time being given how that deal was structured.

Meh, as popular as it is, I think the SEC would then own the SECN. That would mean more money for all of our schools.

What is the profitability of the SEC Network? On one hand I would be shocked if it isn't making money but I have to admit that I rarely tune in to it and I'm probably in their target market.

Is the SECN having an issue with Ad revenues?
