Did Virginia Tech ever receive an invitation to join the SEC?

I admit I got a laugh out of the "look at poor Missouri" comments when everyone from Missouri has been shouting "Whee" and throwing handfuls of money in the air since they joined the SEC.

I'm sure they probably did behind closed doors, but it was probably very difficult for them to get out of the ACC and they probably weren't as desperate to leave. Unlike a team like A&M.

As a GT fan, I do not believe they are. Nobody would tie themselves to a bunch of neck sweater wearing sissies like UVA. And even if they were tied to UVA theyd just leave anyways and UVA would just drink their sorrows in another glass of merlot or zima and not do shite about it.

Virginia Tech has never shared a league with Texas, tho.

Texas is AIDS. Gotta get away from AIDS.

What teams would the ACC like to expand to? ND and WVU? Those would be good additions IMO.

The VT folks I know that have moved to Myrtle Beach all claim that the UVA folks in the VA legislature have always threatened to slash VT's state funding if they left for the SEC without UVA.

The folks in the state legislature made UVA get VT in the ACC in the first place.

ETA: UVA itself probably wouldn't give a shite if VT left. They'd only care if it put the stability of the ACC in jeopardy, and if the conference collapsed, UVA would just be off to the B1G to make even more money.

I think that's how it went down. And besides, VT hasn't been in the ACC that long, and was probably worried about the bad blood it may have created.

WVU is a terrible revenue generator for anyone. This is why they have never received that ACC invite that they so covet, and why the SEC passed on them.

IIRC Beamer said at the time he didn't want to go to the SEC.

Yes, absolutely. Unfortunately for them it came in a time capsule like device that won't open until they win a natty in an ncaa sport.

I wouldn't blame UVA, after Tech used politics to get in the ACC. UVA was against the move till politicians forced them to back Tech.
Eta: and we don't want them. They have the history of Ole Miss, likely worse, and act like they are Alabama.

I recently got into a small argument with someone on Reddit who was claiming Missouri was a more desirable school than Virginia Tech in terms of market and brand.

Somebody register and let them know that the fans of the other 13 SEC schools would trade Mizzou for Va Tech in a heartbeat. So yes, they are more desirable.

I'm sure we probably reached out and got rejected though, they do seem to have carved out a good fit in the ACC.

But Mizzou was a desperation grab for us. No way they get an invite on their own. But we needed somebody to come along with the Aggies to even things out, and Mizzou was way down the list for sure but just the first to say yes.

Probably lucky they did, had the Big Ten wanted them, where they fit in, the next schools on the list under them are probably begging Tulane to come back or the likes of Memphis, UAB, or Troy.

I would love to have VT. They are within spitting distance of campus and would make a great substitute rival for us since the SEC is determined to kill off the remnants of our rivalry with UK.

Merlot drinking sissies they may be but UVA is the kind of school you give your left nut to get into. Few universities outside of the Ivies can truly change your life's trajectory just by the connections you make by going there and UVA is one of them.
