Did Texas AM crushing USCe kill the SEC vs SEC first week games?

Lets face it. Texas AM took USCe to the woodshed hard last year. Auburn also started with Arkansas which was a great game but risky for both teams.

Will we see SEC vs SEC in the near future or will coaches shy away from it

Nah. It was an anomaly. If you remember in 2013 we started with Ole Miss-Vandy and that game is an all-time classic. I don't like Ole Miss starting their season with a conference game because it's such a huge game to start the season with. If you win it's great, if you lose it's like your season is already over.

I'm pretty sure everyone "faced it" before the game even finished. There was no debate that we got destroyed.

We just weren't good last year. I don't really think the fact that we lost to an SEC team had anything to do with it.

Nah. We started with UGA from 1992-1995, Vandy in 2004 and 2012, and @MSU in 2006.

It's not the most common thing in the world, but not terribly rare either.

It's all about TV. If there are good out of conference games that weekend, then there will be no reason for TV to ask for conference games to be moved. If everyone tries to schedule an FCS opener, then that's a problem.

Of course, A&M-USC was sort of a special case since they wanted an appealing game for the SEC Network opener.

That was an excellent game.

This can definitely be annoying on its own, but what really makes it bad is you have that big game, then play 3 cupcakes in a row before you get to another real game (as was A&M's case last year). I'd rather the season flow like a typical story arc. At least have the big game as week 2 or 3 to break up the cupcakes.

Never have been a fan of conference games in week 1. Move those to Nov. and stop playing FCS teams in Nov.

Kind of my point. Three years in a row we had them, now none.

Do we know what next years week1 looks like

I like the idea of opening with a compelling OOC instead of cupcakes and conference foes.

The only reason we had conference games in week 1 last year was the launching of the SEC Network two weeks before the season started. They demanded some in conference games for the first week when the schedules were being made.

I doubt we see conference games in week 1 ever again.

Great point. To take it a step further, a game like USC vs A&M is a solid Tier 2 (aka ESPN 1/2-level) game. The SEC Network is meant to mostly be Tier 3 (aka Bama vs So Miss or UK vs Vandy) games, but they needed leverage to get full coverage in Texas when some cable companies balked at the price. Moving that Tier 2 game to a Tier 3 platform created that leverage.

Problem is not everything is ak ok at ESPN. ESPN 1 is going backwards on distribution and is losing subscribers. They need a reason for people to keep ESPN more than SECN because SECN is an add-on really. So they probably can't afford to drop too many more choice Tier 2 games onto the SECN.

I suspect the first year of the SECN had a lot to do with last seasons games. I doubt we'll see Auburn vs arkie or A&M vs USCe again. The teams dislike these for openers.

Even though I'm very excited to be playing the Seminoles in Orlando to open the 2016 season, I'd like to commend Auburn, Mizzou, and Texas A&M on playing home-and-home series with notable opponents.

I wish we could have a home-and-home with Florida State rather than playing in Orlando.

Oh well, maybe it will help 'crootin.

It certainly set an unreasonable hype train for A&M

Aggie team was tired of hearing that the USCe stadium was too hot and too loud for them to play football in.

May have scheduled it like that because the SECN wanted high ratings for the first game telecast.
