Yes. He wasn't recruiting and refused to fire staff members go that needed to go. In 2004 we returned everyone from 2003 except for Eli and Chris Collins.

Duke isn't a pressure-cooker job and the ACC has been down relatively-speaking. Give Cut credit tho, he's been dying his hair and seems to be rejuvenated in Durham.
Not sure if the last 2 years are going to be sustainable, but he has clearly done a great job @ Duke.
Having Cutcliffe's offensive prowess with Hugh Freeze-esque recruiting would've been interesting to see. Other than Eli Manning and some decent OL, there wasn't a lot of NFL talent to work with @ Ole Miss during Cutcliffe's tenure.

All it bought them was misery. Let's look at the historical record.
After a 10-2 1971, Billy Kinard never won more than 5 games in a season. Ken Cooper never won more than 6 games in a season and Steve Sloan never won more than 5.
Brewer averaged 6.2 wins & 5 losses
Tubs averaged 6.5 wins & 5 losses
Cutts averaged 7.2 wins & 4.8 losses
O averaged 3.3 wins & 8.3 losses
Reverend Nutt averaged 6 wins & 6.5 losses
Freezus has thus far averaged 8 wins & 5 losses
So, as we enter 2015 from a production standpoint the two best coaches at OM since Johnny Vaught retired have clearly been Cutcliff & Freeze. Freeze averages winning a little short of a game a season more and Cutt's average seasonal losses are just a bit better. In conference, Cutts was 25-23 in the SEC and Freeze is sitting at 11-13.
The difference? Freeze gets the benefit of playing the extra cupcake all SEC teams added when the NCAA went to a 12 game schedule in 2006. If Cutts had that game, he's probably got a half dozen more wins.
Firing Cutcliffe accomplished nothing but sending them on 7 year mission to find their way back to being perennial a 5 loss team.

No. A school like Ole Miss would have been well served finding a QB guy like Cutcliffe, getting a freshman in there, and building towards his senior season.

I think we fired Orgeron a year too soon. The big rumor was that Ole Miss was going to the spread. Can't help but think we were going to install Freeze's offense, with Jevan Snead at quarterback.

As you well know, UT hired him as OC in '06 and he left after the '07 season to coach at Duke. UT approached him about the job and he wasn't interested (too much pressure).

It was a bad move. That's pretty much universally known. But, had he not been fired, it's highly unlikely he'd been there much longer anyway.

I'm a huge Cutcliffe fan but at that time Coach Cut was a fantastic OC still trying to figure out how to be a good HC. He had a lot of it together at OM but he was still learning on the job too and OM is a difficult place to have to learn on the job. It really wasn't until Duke that he started to his prime as an Head Coach.

Cutcliffe is a great guy, but he did not want to recruit. He was successful because he had Eli at QB. People don't realize how much he underachieved before we got Eli. I have no doubt that had Tuberville stayed, we would have made an SEC championship with Romero Miller and Deuce. But the bottom line is, if you are going to be successful in the SEC, you have to recruit at an elite level.

This makes Freeze's accomplishments, thus far, all the more impressive, especially considering the Mongolian clusterfrick he inherited in the wake of Houston Dale Nutt's two-win swan song.

Shula faced Cut twice and was 1-1.
Overall, Cut was 2-4 against Bama. That's the exact same winning percentage Freezus currently has against Bama and better than Johnny Vaught's career record of 2-5.
Edited to add: The only coach in the history of Alabama football that's lost more than 1 game to Ole Miss is Bear Bryant & Cut is the only coach to date other than Vaught to beat Bama more than once during his entire career at Ole Miss. If you fired him based on performance against Bama, you made an extraordinarily bad call.
