You sure?

Alabama cares about beating LSU because you are the only thing that stands between Bama and the SEC West title. If LSU had 4 losses and a mediocre team, Bama fans would not care about beating LSU because LSU would be irrelevant.

So if LSU was a 4 loss team and you were a four loss team would it matter then. You are working with the premise that you will always be at this current level.
ETA: If LSU was a 4 loss team and UA was undefeated and LSU wins. what then?

:kige:

Same thing I posted earlier. If SEC and BCS implications were tied to this game recently, it would be no different than playing anyone else in the West.

What?..UT almost beat bama in 09, Auburn did beat Bama...a lot of times during this pass decade. Just because a team is 'down' doesn't mean their isn't a rivalry...just as if two 2 are good doesn't mean an instant rivalry

No it wouldn't matter then. Only beating AU and UT matters in our down years. Outside of TD, Bama fans don't care about LSU fans. They only care about the LSU team, but they do care about rubbing it in to UT and Auburn fans 365 days a year.

LSU is beneath Bama, not worthy of a rivalry

Funny, I feel the exact opposite, except I only consider rivals teams I don't like and fanbases I don't respect. Alabama just doesn't fit that criteria.

wins and loses always matter. but, if both of our two teams had this record with no sec/bscnc on the line, alabama fans would love to win. but, winning the rivalry games with auburn & tenn. would be much bigger. sharing the state & state borders makes for long lasting and huge rivalries, no matter the recent records of the teams.

The best/easiest litmus test for determining a rivalry is to think about the game if LSU had 2-3 losses already and wasn't one of the teams in the nation that can matchup with Bama. Would this game be as big as it has been the last cpl seasons when the SEC and BCS were riding on the outcome? Probably not. It would probably he similar to playing Arkansas or Miss St. Playing UT and AU is always a big deal and a game Bama fans desperately want to win, regardless of whether or not it has implications in the SEC/BCS and regardless of records.

AU and UT have always been competitive longterm. If AU and UT lost most of the games over the next 25 yrs. they would cease to be rivals like Tulane ceased to be LSU's rival in the 80's. You are fortunate to strong opponents in state and on your border.

AU could be sub 500 for the next 50 years and it would still be a huge rivalry because it is in the same state and AU fans and UA fans work side by side, live with one another, etc.

I can see UT starting to fall off if they suck for an extended period of time, and of the SEC were to go to 16 teams and West teams no longer were able to play an East team every year, during the regular season, then obviously that would be a major blow to the rivalry. I see expansion as the biggest threat to games like UA/UT and AU/UGA.

But unless the state of GA annexed Lee County and AU joined the ACC, then they will always be our rival.

I don't so much consider it a "traditional" rivalry but its def means a lot more than just any other big game with each being powerhouses. Also with Saban at Bama fuels a little fire although I'm not mad about that.

Is Tulane in the SEC West? Are they conference team in the same division as LSU?

While I do find comparing AU and Tulane humorously enjoyable, comparing Tulane v LSU to the Iron Bowl is apples and oranges.

Just because two teams are in the same state, doesn't make them a rivalry on par with the IB.

There's a helluva lot more going on between UA and AU besides being in the same state.
