Childress took a huge gamble with our postseason and lost. He tried to steal one by starting a midweek guy and chewing through the bullpen. It backfired. Terrible risk IMO as we have put ourselves on the bubble. If there are too many tournament upsets across the country, we could be outside looking in when it is all over.

It's the way the tourney sets up. I wouldn't pitch our ace on 4 days rest when he used to 6. You're not going to rest a starter during the regular season. The tourney needs to be improved. The coaches don't need to kill their ace before regionals.

Childress played the high risk high reward option. If Dox goes 7 or 8 innings and we win, we are in good shape the rest of the way. We would be throwing our ace on 5 days instead of 4.

The real downside (other than possibly not going to a regional) is our starters will be playing on 2 weeks rest and could come out stiff.

My only knock on the strategy is you can only do that when you know for sure you are in the field of 64. Huge black eye if we don't make the cut now.

It's still 2 days short of normal rest. The single elim in the first round hurts the league. This isn't a Childress problem, this is an SEC problem. Big 12 had it right all those years with 3 games guaranteed and only 4 games for the teams in the finals.

Agree to disagree. As long as the SEC makes all teams play the same schedule on that last weekend and everyone is in the same boat, then it is just baseball.

You may have to play 5 games in a regional on a weekend. Someone is playing on short rest period. That is baseball.

The teams are aware the first day is single elimination. Knowing that, you need to play to win. Mizzou did, and we did not today. We gambled and in this case we lost.

Agree.

Its not the same. 8 teams play Tuesday, not 12. So far 3 of the 4 teams haven't started their weekend guys. Mizzou did and he didn't pitch last weekend. No coaches thus far are. Ole Miss isn't either (I don't think) Auburn is. We'll see how effective Thompson is and how he performs in regionals.

Guys will go on short rest and extended periods in regionals. But regionals >>>>> SEC tourney. SEC tourney should work to set you up for regionals, not hurt you before them.

I would say Mizzou's gamble was last weekend when they save Tanner. It didn't work. We hit him hard.

Most of the teams playing today are on the bubble. Half of them will go 0-1 and hurt their chances. You play double elim or a round robin and those bubble teams have more opportunities to help get in.

On the flip side, I think it's safe that A&M and Auburn get in even going 0-1. However playing one game before regionals doesn't get your pitchers work right before the biggest weekend to date. It's not a good look for the conference to lose in regionals.

Nothing is perfect, but there are easy resolutions to the issue I brought up.

Do your work in the regular season and no worries.

How many chances do you need to get off the bubble, one more game in the SEC Tourney most likely gets you beat.

A&M? None

But take away the bubble part. 1 game one Tuesday hurts your rotation buy not getting them live work.

These are obvious issues with easy fixes.

Teams that are out or on the bubble like Mizzou throw there best pitching rotation to stay in the Tourney or possibly win.If they're lucky their pitchers are shite in a regional.

SEC Tourney doesn't mean shite if you do work during the season.

Because they sat him last weekend. Ole Miss is on the bubble and chose not to. USCe & Vandy didn't either.

I'm beginning to think this tournament serves no purpose. The more baseball the better as a fan, it just seems to wear down team's pitching.

It either wears them down by forcing teams to throw guys early or a select few will have to play 5 to 6.

A round robin, a smaller field, consolation games, double elim to single elim, etc. There are ways to correct it so teams get the right amount of games in (closer to it) without burning up arms.

Auburn is using Thompson on short rest and he's off his game. Is it because of the short rest? Maybe. Maybe not.
