Behind Saban. Amazing how many coaches have come and gone since Mullen was hired.

Mullen is possibly the most underrated coach in America based on what he's done with the limited resources he has had to work with.

He hasn't done anything to be rated any differently.

Just saw the other thread about his extension. I see now you are just trying to make lemonade out of the lemons your AD has just announced.

I think he's pretty properly rated. People consistently talk about what a good coach he is, and he is. Honestly, I think he sometimes get a bit too much praise and fawning. He's a very solid coach and State has done a great job keeping him around.

State could be set up to have another good run at winning the SEC in 2019 and I wouldn't sleep on them this coming season. They can beat any other team in the conference. They will struggle with LSU and Bama because they just don't quite have the receiver corps to go against the safeties those two teams have so their passing game will be somewhat limited by that, but don't fool yourself into thinking there is no way they could win either of those games.

Fitz is gonna be good. Dan has proven he can develop a QB. Out of all the QBs in the SEC, he is the one I worry about the most. If he had the line Bama does, he'd be unstoppable.

Dan Mullen won 5 games in 2016. He is no genius. South Alabama beat State and Mullen started a 150 lb TB until he got hurt and was forced to play the back-up

Mullen has been State's coach for 8 years- and has won 6 or less regular season games in 4 of those.

Didn't he get national coach of the year in 14? He makes $4+ mm a year. Not sure how you consider him underrated.

And that's as good as it's gonna get because, let's face it, you're Mississippi State. The winningest coach in your program's history won 75 games over 13 seasons. And he had to accomplish most of that by cheating.

They've also come very close to losing to UAB and Troy in the past. I'd say he has trouble with mid-major Alabama schools but really it's all mid-majors

This season also had a come from behind victory over UMASS on the road. Come from behind 1 point bowl win over Miami (OH)

But but bur he's such a good coach tho! GOAT 5-7 Bowl team

EXTENSION

ETA: and who the hell goes on the road as a P5 school to play the types of schools that MSU does?

I like what Dan has done here. My only problem is with this past season, he didn't deliver. He sat 3 and sometimes 4 capable RB's in favor of a smaller scat back that couldn't get short yardage. He didn't stop doing it until late in the season. That was quite insane, and inexplicable. That and hiring Sirmon, site unseen, who was not anywhere close to ready to being a DC, and may never be.

At least the UMass game was in Gillette Stadium.

He's also made State one of only 6 SEC schools with 7 straight bowl games
