In Saturday's game, an LSU player was flagged for continuing to play after losing is helmet. For safety reasons, a player is to quit during the play if he loses his helmet. That brought up a couple of questions.

1. What if a running back or quarterback loses his helmet during the play? Say the RB loses his helmet during a gang tackle. But he breaks free. Is he flagged for continuing to run without his helmet?

2. Is the player that lost his helmet protected? Does the opposing team get flagged if the helmetless player is blocked or hit during the remainder of the play?

Yes, the play is blown dead. In LSU case it was blatantly obvious since he ran several yards to make the tackle.

Lat year Chubb lost his helmet during a run and ran for about 7-8 more yards after. He was not flagged and the ball was spotted from where his helmet came off.

I understand the point of the rule but damn man it's almost impossible to get a player to stop persuing a play even if his helmet is off. I like the rule on the college level. Especially when you're playing on concrete like the carrier dome. Man frick that horrible field, I hope no one in the sec has to ever go up there and play.

It just sucks that the play is blown dead if an offensive player loses his helmet but if a defensive player loses his, it's not and the defensive player is just supposed to lie down and stop pursuit.

I get why the rule is in place but in no way should it be a fricking 15 yard penalty.

5 yards max

This all started in the NFL when Jason Witten ran 20 yds after his helmet was taken off against the Eagles

Depends. Bama players benefit from separate rulings - I read it here.

Official discretion, hard to say how they will rule. I have seen a player continue play and not get called but he did a good job acting as if he were caught in the crowd.

What was also blatantly obvious was the hands to the face that knocked his helmet off He was a freaking d lineman, did the refs just think it jumped off his head?

I get that the rule is to protect the players but a PF for 15 yds. is harsh.

Plus, the Personal Foul call causes cognitive dissonance: PF against yourself?

I'd go with Illegal Procedure 5 yds.

Lewis Neal had his helmet shoved off his head by an offensive player trying to block him. Where is the flag for hands to the facemask? I cant fault Neal for continuing the play and tackling the QB, its not natural for a D linemen to just quit when his helmet is pulled off his head. I enjoyed the effort. He has a want to sack the quarterback!

I understand the rule and the purpose of the rule. I however, dislike the rule.

It also appears on the replay, that the Syracuse players were still blocking him, sans helmet.

Alas, the rule is clear and it was a clear violation of said rule.

Beast play though, IMO.

Neal was an animal on Saturday. But I had this same question, let's say the rb breaks free and scores but doesn't have his helmet? I understand the rule, but players aren't going to quit on a play.

by both teams. That penalty resulted in a score. should offset. Cuse should have had to punt.

we had a plethera of penalties that resulted in pts for Cuse.

I won't complain about the calls vs. LSU, but the ones NOT called vs. Cuse was a bit sad.

Let an LSU (or any SEC) player take a swing (intentional or not) at another player and see if we don't get an unsportsmanlike.

The rule is a joke. The NFL applauds JJ Watt when he makes tackles without his helmet.

This is what I had a problem with. The rule, whether I like it or not, is what it is but if the player is ineligible & can get flagged if he continues to participate in the play, why aren't the opposing players also penalized if they continue to block the player who no longer has a helmet on? That rule needs to be put back on the table & cleared up.
