While mullen has done alot to repair the damage that was done by the end of the JWS/Croom era i don't think he has exceeded expectations by any means. Playing a soft arse schedule and beating a few cupcake SEC teams a year is not what the University should settle for. While i admire the attitude change Dan has brought i think he is still lacking as a in game manager and as a recruiter. The fact that he has had many close calls against sub-par teams should tell you he is not a superior coach. There have been many games the last 2 seasons against top flight teams where his decision making in crucial moments have left me scratching my head saying "What in the frick was that?". With that said i am still saying the jury is out on him, but i am nowhere near as excited about him as i was when he was hired. It has become pretty obvious that he needs Meyer more than Meyer needs him from a success standpoint.

I got into this conversation yesterday with a friend and I am a big Dan Mullen fan. He told me Mullen has run his course in Starkville and we need new blood in Starkville. I told him we likely couldn't do better than Mullen and he argued with me.

So...

6-6 last year and beat OM: all is well

8-4 this year and lose to OM: run his course in Starkville

I think MSU and their fans are simply content with beating the evil Ole Miss every once in a while.

Content with it? Haha

That's precious.

I expect it.

There... That's better

Hell i never denied that. I think most State fans were hoping he was an integral part of their equation for success and hoped he could bring some of that magic to Starkville. I was skeptical from day 1 since much of their success was a result of having Alex Smith and Tebow and we didn't and still don/t have those types of horses

Ol Dan caught Urban on a down year with his pants around his ankles that year in the swamp. That was Dan's superbowl

You don't get fired at too many school's for 8 wins. Next year could be rough though.

True enough, but I was referring more about next year. The parity in this league is such that the difference between a good season and a shitty one comes down to just a handful of plays. If y'all have a bad year next season, does State pull the trigger or let it ride? I have no idea what Mullen's buyout is but I would think the offers will eventually be too much to keep Hud waiting for State at ULL.

Depends on who you think is better.

I think Larry Fedora is a better coach and would go to MSU in a heartbeat.

I think Hud would do a better job taking over the current program, but Dan has built a solid foundation and with new staff members, could start taking the next step. He has to have a mobile qb and new offensive staff members though. I wouldn't say he has run his course but he has to change some things. Collins will have his defense looking better next year. Dan has to take control and improve on the offensive side and he could keep improving the program.

I still say he should have just played Dak all year and taken the chance. I've said since he was recruited that Russell is not the quarterback for Merlins' offense.

Yeah, but it would not have looked good for Mullen to reject a highly rated QB before he even coached a game.

I agree that Dak would be better for the offense...that's why I think we bounce back in 2014.

i think Dan will be crucified if he starts Dak over Russel and it fails. It sounds asinine to say but he is hamstrung w/ tyler until he is gone. Is Dak that good of a passer anyways? Honestly i haven't seen enough him to say, but if the offense would be handicapped ala the Relf era then frick that noise.

I only wish we could feel the fulfillment of rushing the field after beating our rival to cap a 6-6 season.

Historically MSU is a coach's graveyard, so I'd tamper my expectations.

I think that the 1st game of next year vs Oklahoma State in Houston is the biggest game in Dan's career at State.
