My buddy is a UGA fan, and believes it unfair to these small schools to have to get abused by power 5 schools. His line of thinking is due to the unfortunate accident that the Southern player had, which was a terrible spinal injury. My friend basically said "these guys have no business being on the field with SEC schools, and it's not worth the few hundred thousand bucks they get to play."

LSU plays EMU, and they are terrible. Like, God awful terrible. They are small and have below average athletes, in comparison to LSU. I agree with my friend to an extent and am curious what y'all think.

TIA

Meh...rumors that SEC is going to ask the NCAA if they can schedule division 2 teams in non-conference play since their schedules are too tough.

Well the Southern player's injury was his own fault by lowering his head all the way down when going in for a hit. It still sucks and was a terrible accident, but that was because of bad form, not being undersized

The players at these small schools say differently. The highlights of their seasons are playing these games, the highlights of their offseason is reaping the financial rewards from these games with facilities and amenities

They get more than a "few hundred thousand bucks" and that payday is definitely worth it to them. Some of these FCS schools are going to have some money issues if the FBS ever stops playing them.

They get paid a generally 500k or more to come get bet I don't think it's unfair at all

I worded badly. He meant that it was unfair to the players. He sort of referred to it as the school letting these kids get pummeled over a few hundred thousand bucks.

fair point

and people get hurt in football, no matter who you're playing. My buddy was basically just saying he felt like the players were essentially being pimped out.

Like I said, the players from the small schools dont care about that aspect. They love the games. The losses mean nothing to them, they really only care about conference games as far as victories

Eh, idk. I think speaking for all of the players is a little short sighted. But I also see your point. It's a highlight game and lots of folks dream about an Appalachian St.-type upset.

The flip side is, how many of these smaller programs rely on these games for funding? How many would have to close their doors if they could no longer schedule them?

Without these games a lot of FCS and non-power-5 FBS teams don't have a football program.

I can tell you for sure on 3 for 3 teams that I know players from small schools(that play SEC and ACC teams)

Its the trip and playing in the big time atmosphere, they know they are not going to win a NC, but they can win a conference championship. The money from the games the players almost see directly as well, in the form of facilities, etc..

I think we should prohibit FBS vs FCS in the regular season, but I like the idea of a pre-season of 1 FBS vs FCS game per FBS school.

Coaches can see what they have without feeling the need to run up the score or beat up on FCS teams for style points.

I'd say your friend seems dramatic. It's not like it's kids vs the Monstars. It's college athlete vs college athlete.

Now do I wish all these bullshite games took place? No, but not due to the reasons stated in tOP.

After Kevin Everett, I think the NFL should have stepped in and stopped the Bills from playing the Broncos. It isn't worth it.

Eastern Michigan just put out a first round draft pick. It's not like they aren't capable of getting talent. And these universities get paid in the millions to come play is man. Mcneese got over a mill to not play us.
