Once a successful coach leaves involuntarily or is fired, a school will endure 2 unsuccessful coaches or 10 years in the wilderness, at a minimum. There is no maximum time limit to their suffering.

There are no exceptions to this rule, and unsuccessful is defined by a fanbase's expectations. It is a vengeance carried down by the football gods for losing faith, as the Israelites did in the god of Abraham. Was this rule always applicable? Maybe not, but evidence suggests it is now.

Let's look at some examples to illustrate the point.

Phil Fulmer - Won an NC at UT, coached until 2008. Was fired 1 year after a ten win season. The gods looked with displeasure at this, and UT was slapped with The Rule. The Rule says 2 unsuccessful coaches, or 10 years, minimum. You could say Kiffin counted, even if he only coached one year. But UT hasn't met the 10 year minimum. That means Butch will probably be fired, as UT is not allowed to be successful until 2018.

Bobby Petrino - Fired because he had sex in 2011. He was only 3 years into a successful run at Arkansas. John L Smith was an interm, and likely doesn't count to the football gods. I'm sorry, I don't make the rules. Don't shoot the messenger. Arky either has to fire Bret and endure the next coach who will also be awful, or wait until 2021.

Florida - Urban Meyer left after too many nightmares about a short little red gremlin and heart trouble in 2010. Since UF did not fire him, the gods may look favorably, but probably not. They're total assholes. Muschamp was the first, and only went 3 years. I'm sorry Gators, but the rule says McElwain is gonna suck.

A&M - A&M fired R.C. Slocum for only winning 6 games in 2002. Won A&M's last conf championship, had multiple 10 win seasons and CCs. Rule says 2 coaches or 10 years, and A&M had Fran and Sherman, both unsuccessful. In 2012, right on schedule, A&M changes coaches and gets Manziel. 10 win season.

Gene Stallings - Stallings resigns after the weight of drama at Bama starts to become crushing in late 1997. Bama is not immune to The Rule. They must suffer. And suffer they do, for 10 years until in 2007, Saban arrives.

Jim Tressel was forced to resign amid NCAA violations and Urban won a NC just a few years later.

Yeah but:

Arkansas: Forces Houston Nutt out after 3 division titles, has two ten win seasons within the next 4 years.

Auburn: Fires Chiz after NC, wins SEC the next season

LSU: fires Dinardo after he brings LSU back from the grave, brings Saban in and has an NC 5 years later.

just off the top of my head

Is a 10 win season supposed to represent success in some way?

Cokebottleag, what you’ve just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Does not work at UF. Spurrier 1 NC, Zook UF sucks, Meyer 2 NCs, Muschamp UF sucks, Mac Infinity+1 NCs.

Ole Miss: Cutcliffe fired in 2004 after 1 losing season. Ed O and Nutt follow. 2 up years (9-4 in 2008-2009) but otherwise a dumpster fire until Freezus in 2012.

Um. Your rule is invalid. I can't be triggered by invalid rules.

Spurrier, Zook, Urban

Add Nebraska among others and go back to 1980 and add LSU.

We helped Mac Pack and in the most hateful expression of football godisness Bo Rein's plane went down and LSU experienced TWENTY YEARS in the coaching wilderness, mostly the bad, bad lands.

Now we have a bunch of a holes who want to send Miles packing. A dastardly act for which the fbgs might never forgive us.
