Not even the biggest gump homer thought Coker was a Heisman candidate.
JJ however was pumped up to be the next coming of Joe Montana by Gussie himself.

I don't know anyone that was pushing Coker to be preseason anything this year.

I think most Alabama fans knew Coker wasn't very good, so this thread is stupid.
jk I can make fun of Auburn, so never mind.

2013 Coker vs. 2014 JJ... Both Junior QBs with lots of Heisman Hype. More national hype on JJ, more local hype on Coker..
I am good with calling this one a draw.
2013 Coker was 10th (USA), note Nick Marshall was 6th.
COKER: ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. said he was a first round talent with an arm that could make all the throws and the athleticism to beat teams with his feet.
The assumption was he would start for two years at Alabama, lead them to a pair of SEC titles and maybe a national title before leaving for the NFL as a first round pick.

oker has generated some Bunyanesque buzz.
COKER ON THE MOVE
Jacob Coker visiting Alabama
"I've never had anybody with his size who throws it as well as he does," said FSU QB coach Randy Sanders who's been around big-time programs since his days as a Tennessee player in the mid-80s with the Vols star-crossed quarterback Tony Robinson. "Jake has a really quick release with tremendous arm strength. Rarely does it not spiral or not go where he wants it to go."
Asked if Coker's arm is even better than Winston, the resident Heisman winner, Sanders paused for a few breaths before saying, "Coker's arm is kind of at a different level. Jameis has a very special arm, and this isn't any knock against Jameis, but Jake's probably the best I've seen in 25 years at throwing it."

You have a short, short memory.... Coker was going to be the BEST QB at Bama every... He was as good as Winston (#1 Pick), strongest arm ever, Heisman winner, 2 SEC championships and a NC...
Coker was plenty hyped when he transferred to Bama.. Every bit as much as JJ, maybe more.

Is this a serious question? Coker lost out to a RB last year, bama fans weren't expecting him to set the world on fire. And he hasn't even played bad. JJ's own coach pumped him up as a world beater and he did this

Auburn fans had been treating Johnson like the second coming since mid-2014. Most Bama fans didn't even want Coker starting. He had considerable hype when he first transferred, but no hype whatsoever before this year. I literally had people telling me how much better Johnson would be than Cam Newton.

Coker (6-foot-5, 230 pounds) will head into the season carrying as much hype as any quarterback not named Winston, Miller, Mariota, Hundley or Petty. Florida State coaches were effusive in their praise of Coker when he transferred -- Jimbo Fisher, for one, said Coker would be a talent upgrade at quarterback for the Tide -- and conventional wisdom is that he will step immediately into the starting lineu

If you compare 2014 Coker vs. 2014 JJ, that is not the key. JJ will receive ZERO hype next year as a senior.
If you compare 2013 Coker HYPE vs. 2014 JJ hype, I still see a draw. Bama fans were absolutely giddy in the off season about his potential until Blake Simms beat him out.

Actually thought Coker player pretty well last game. He had about 6-7 drops - including a TD. One really bad pass - hell but most QBs give up a pick at times.
If Bama gets that out of him (without the drops) in the GA game, they win.

Now you are just going overboard. I have never seen one person (outside of a flaming message board) who thought that.

He started out his posts in here stating local hype then proceeded to post hype from the USA Today, Mel Kiper, and FSU's coaches. He's just upset that Jermey is having the most embarrassing season for an SEC player in recent history. Let him melt.

Anyone trying to argue that Coker had more hype coming in than Jeremy Johnson is clueless. Aubs are just trying to swing it to where they don't get bashed for being completely wrong about Johnson and Gus. Coker's hype was amounted to nothing other than he was going to be very McElroy-esque. Johnson was receiving hype from his own coach, his fans, and media outlets everywhere

If I had a vote, I'd vote Auburn

I believe Jeremy Johnson will be every bit as good as Malzahn thinks he is. How often does a head coach bring a first-year starting quarterback to SEC Media Days? Johnson may be the first. When Malzahn the quarterback whisperer says Johnson's skill set "will allow us to call all of our offense," defensive coordinators from Louisville to Tuscaloosa should go to DEFCON 1. Immediately.

Forget for a moment who was hyped the most. The plain truth is that Coker is still a starting QB for an SEC team and Johnson has been reduced to a bench warmer. Obvious choice is obvious.
