He won't be coaching anywhere for a while.

If Kelly doesn't sign with anyone for 2017, he'll make $6.5 million from the Eagles and 49ers combined next season.
If he stays out of football after that, the 49ers would have to pay him $6 million to do nothing for the 2018 and 2019 seasons.
Basically, if Kelly takes the next three years off, he'll still make $18.5 million. It's nice work, if you can get it.

There's a pretty silly assumption in that though...

The assumption is that Chip Kelly loves money more than football.

At a certain point you have all the money you actually need.. and unless your entire existence is centered around money.. you should be using that freedom to do what you truly enjoy.

Just accept that Lyle will be on your sidelines next year.

Wait wait wait

I was told by the local radio stations in Birmingham that he was a lock at taking an assistant position at Bama.

18 million to wait 3 years to coach isn't a bad gig.

I'll do it for a fraction of that price.

Personally, if I'm an ambitious AD, I throw him an offer of 4-years $17m. $500k for the first two years of the deal (49ers will still have the pay him the other $5.5m of the $6m owed to him annually). Then year three and year four are at about $8m/year. Structure the buyout accordingly. You basically got 4 years of Chip Kelly for the price of 2.

Just because he's guaranteed $6m from the niners, doesn't necessarily mean he won't be coaching.

i think you might worry about what your stock would be if you sat out that long. You could still demand a pretty sweet package

It's cute you think a buyout would make a difference. Why not do the reverse butch and hire the Kelly who might come to knoxville.

Don't think he loses the buyout money as long as he doesn't get a coaching gig in the NFL.

But I could be wrong

This just means Chip will be a top 3-5 paid guy wherever he is next season. He's earned that, anyway.

According to the story, he doesn't "lose" money at all. The story specifically says the Eagles deal has an offset clause and I'd imagine the 49ers one does too.

He's getting 18.5 million. If he gets a job somewhere else, the amount the NFL teams owe him is reduced by whatever he earns at the new gig.

That's how Bama got Lane Kiffin for a couple hundred grand a year in 2014 & 2015. He was still getting USC money so he really didn't care what Bama paid him (probably WANTED it low to screw USC over). When his USC contract ended in 2016, Bama upped his salary to about 1.5 million.

Let me see...I can make 6 million a year doing whatever I want to do, or I can go coach college nad deal with fans, almuni and administration, while dealing with 18-22 year old kids shenanigans and headaches for 5 million a year.

Tough decision.

Firstly, he's getting $6m/year whether he works or not, that money is coming to him regardless.

The question is, what are you going to do in 2020 and beyond. He's got $6m coming his way in 2018 and 2019 but as it stands right now, he has peanuts coming his way in 2020 or he can get back to head coaching and make $5m+/year for the next 10 years or so.

...real tough decision

If college football counts like an NFL the it Sounds like he would be more likely to be an OC . He wouldn't care about the money . So there is no need for the pressure of being head coach. He would be a great fit as the OC for Clemson or OSU because they have head coaches that can recruit for him and already have the talent for his offense.

Then this means in three years Chip Kelly is coming to LSU!

By then we will have a new AD and Orgeron will be shown the door. Then the new AD will make a splash and hire Chip fresh off that NFL money roaring to GEUAX!!!

Can’t wait !

Chip Kelly was exposed as a pretty much terrible coach

Oregon was already on their way and they had one of the top 10 richest people in the world and the largest athletic company in the world 100% on their side

That is where his success came from dont let anyone fool you. With tens of billions of dollars in cash behind you it would be remarkable what you can do both behind and in front of the scenes.

He left and sucked.

On this the Vols have won by not getting him
