Felony charges filed against a suspended University of Tennessee football player accused of assaulting a woman and holding her against her will on Valentine’s Day were dropped Thursday – so long as he doesn’t get in any trouble during the next six months.

Alexis Johnson, 20, was initially charged with aggravated assault and false imprisonment after a girl he previously dated twice accused him of choking her at his Volunteer Hall apartment in the early morning hours of Feb. 14.

Knox County Sessions Court Judge Chuck Cerny on Thursday, however, signed off on a deal that dropped the assault charge to misdemeanor domestic assault and he agreed to throw out the false imprisonment charge altogether.

The deal, though, is good only if Johnson – a defensive tackle – stays clean for the next six months. He will report back to Cerny’s courtroom on Oct. 10.

“We were able to reach a successful agreement with the district attorney’s office,” said Johnson’s attorney, Gregory P. Isaacs. “All the charge will be dismissed in six months. He has no other requirements.”

Hopefully he is. I hate to see a young man's education and possible career thrown away over false accusations.

The charges didn't get dropped, just reduced from a felony to a misdemeanor.

Clearly something happened. First the girl was pressing charges, then she said she wasn't pressing charges, then she joined the Title IX lawsuit and was pressing charges.

I'd rather not have any more bad press if possible, jmo.

You're leaving out that one charge was thrown out altogether.

Wait ... that's not what I took from this. I mean, I get the reduction to a lesser crime with the possibility of it being erased with pretrial intervention and first time offender status ... but the accusations were not deemed false.

This is clearly what's equal to a withdraw and file. If the accusations were false charges would be dropped all together most likely and that's not what this is.

that's actually referred to as a plea deal. he agreed to enter a conditional guilty plea to a reduced charge and was either using pretrial diversion or the case was set aside for 6 months, both of those have the same ultimate legal effect. nothing about that says the charges were dropped

Apparently they were not false accusations, or he wouldn't be on probation. And it wouldn't affect his education. He could have still gone to school and gotten his education, couldn't he?
