I'm going to go with a 75% chance.

This was an 11-2 team last season. They return 15 starters. Not sure why UT fans are so confident. I definitely predict a win for the Vols, but I would be surprised if its not a competitive game for at least a half.

With a line of Vols -20.5, I'd probably take App State. Anyone else feeling this way?

App State will keep it close til the 4th quarter. Obviously pulling for the upset though.

Yea - wouldn't surprise me if this game was 21-10 or something at half with Tennessee winning 38-17 or something.

In the sunbelt, the most noteworthy team they beat was GA Southern.

Their 2 losses were to arkansas state (lol) by 13 and Clemson by 31.

I knwo nothing about htem for '16, but just because they put up a good record against cupcakes last year doesnt' mean they're going to hang with UT.

They've got a good squad with what talent they are able to bring in. It may be competitive for the first few quarters.

App State has a good team and VFL Dale Jones is one of their coaches (Bama you may remember a certain impossible sack/interception in 1985 that won the Vols the game at Legion Field after Tony Robinson was injured + a SECC, and led to the Sugar Vols defeating Miami).

They will be prepared and they will play well. However, App St. does not have the horses to keep up.

I bet it is tbh

I also bet we get lit into at halftime and come out and blow the doors off in the 2nd half.

That's kinda how our season opener against a solid mid major went last year.

It depends by what you classify as "close." Butch has shown the ability to adequately prep for openers:

59-30 vs an arguably stronger BG team (15 pt lead at half)
38-7 vs USU (17 pt lead at half)
45-0 vs APSU (42 pt lead at half)

I wasn't worried about those games and I would argue BGSU and USU were overall better squads than App State and I believe our squad this year is significantly better than years past. I think we will have a 2+ score lead by half, so in that regard I don't think it will be close. I expect to see Dormady play all of the 4th and possibly the entirety of the 2nd half.

I think Martinez' suspension for the bump rule had a lot to do with that. Our secondary was getting lit up and we didn't have our secondary coach or a MLB with any starts behind him.

Also, App State is a running team and they're pretty darn good at it. They have a top 10 OL (not kidding). BGSU was a passing team.

I will say that Appy State is a team we should take seriously. They're a better team than the bottom feeder Vandy's, UK's, and Mizzou's of the world.

I think their upset against Michigan 9 years ago has clouded some people's minds.

They have been blown the frick out in every big OOC matchup since then

Jimmy Hyams ?@JimmyHyams Since upsetting Michigan, Appalachian State has lost 41-13 to LSU (2008), 48-10 to Florida (2010), 66-13 to Virginia Tech (2011) …. (2/2) 45-9 to Georgia (2013), 52-14 to Michigan (2014), 41-10 to Clemson (2015). That’s an average margin of 41.9 to 11.7 to Power 5 teams

You literally have no idea. Our OC and DL coach were on the Michigan staff that lost to App state. We wont be overlooking this game, trust me.

I could see it being close at half. But I don't think we're in any danger of an upset. We hear the same shite from ya'll year in and year out

2015: BGSU is going to surprise the Vols! (we beat them by 29)

2014: USU and Arky State are no pushovers. Vols lose at least one of those (We beat them by a combined 46 points)

2013: Who the hell is Butch Jones? Bobby Petrino at WKU is going to shred UT this year! (win by 32)

Even going back to Dooley in 2012: NC State will blow the Vols out of the water in ATL (Win by 14

To be fair, they were pretty bad (relative to their previous success) from 2011-2014

2011 : 8-4 (1AA)
2012 : 8-4 (1AA)
2013 : 4-8 (1AA)
2014 : 7-5 (1A)
2015 : 11-2 (1A)

So, of all those big losses, most occurred while still 1AA in the late 2000s and the rest were while they weren't very good overall.

This is probably going to be their best team ever this season (hard to compare their elite 1AA teams with a pretty good 1A team), which doesn't mean a ton, but they will be pretty good. Doesn't mean they will give Tennessee any problems, but they are a lot better than any of those prior teams that got hammered by 1A teams.

Hmm. So if App State beats the Canes in game 3 will you be talking about how they never beat good OOC teams? And App State lost to Clemson last year by 27 less points than Miami did.

What will you be thinking of Richt's tenure if he loses to App State?
