Hadn't seen this posted yet. The overnight numbers were down 15% from last year to a 15.8 rating.

Why the drop? Uninteresting matchup? Bama fatigue? Monday night game?

Same reason Finebaum's ratings are down on ESPN. It's all bama & that has no draw nationwide despite bama ranters feeling they are the nation's team.

No one expected this year's game to rate better than last year's.

Last year was the very first year of the playoff. I feel like it will always hold the record.

This. I'm afraid that this will be a trend. Since 2006 9 of the 10 NC came from the south. If you look at the recruiting trends, you will see that it will not stop anytime in the future. Going forward ESPN and the CFB playoff committee will continue to allow only one team from the same conference and now they may match teams from different conferences, but same regions, against each other in a semifinal game to maximize viewership for the title game. Also, if ND is a one loss team they will get in regardless.

I went to a super nice sports bar to watch last night. I was shocked at the turnout. Talking maybe the nicest sportsbar in south florida - Frankies at Gulfstream. Probably seats 250 people and I counted 42 there last night. And only 15 people were there by the 4th quarter.

South Florida can be apathetic about college football, but last night no one was out.

FWIW, that's not a bad rating. But last year's title game was the highest rated event in ESPN history, so there is going to be a drop. The novelty of the playoff is a bit worn off (you're going to get a boost in the first year), combined with a regional matchup that involved two southeast teams.

Go look at the breakdown, and even last year when two teams from outside the SEC were in the game, the numbers in Southeast markets were enormous. Well, you aren't getting those numbers in other regions if it's two SEC teams playing.

OSU also brings in ratings. They had the 2 highest rated games this year if I recall in MSU and Michigan. If this year had been OSU/Bama for the title, it would have beaten last years ratings for sure

Too many bowls, playoffs are too much, conference expansion, etc etc, all the money grabs are causing overexposure and changing what we loved about it.

I'm afraid The bubble is going to burst, big time

Not really. I think the reason is how much time there is between the semis and the finals. It felt like the season was over until the past two days.

Sucks it didn't get as much attention. It turned out to be an amazing game.

as mentioned. Some Bama fatigue. Clemson not a big draw. Last year you had a team from a state with 3 top 50 media markets. Although the ratings did increase as the game went on

SEC Championship was the highest rated game outside of the playoffs. Bama vs LSU was the highest rated regular season game. Don't recall where OSU vs UM and MSU were but I KNOW they were over 9 million for both. Definitely top 5 regular season.

WTF is Bama Fatigue?

Do you not watch the Super Bowl if the Patriots are playing in it?
One reason for the drop is Clemson doesn't have a national following. You could quiz national college football fans and a good number couldn't tell you what state Clemson is in.
