National champs or bust

quote:

Key game: Nov. 9 vs. LSU. The SEC opener at Texas A&M will be the one the world is focused on, but the Alabama coaching staff is using the entire offseason and will take the two weeks of prep time to figure out how to stop ol’ John Heisman. Bad, bad things happen when Saban and his boys are laser-focused on one team and one task – ask Notre Dame. The real killer could be LSU, who should have the kinks well worked out by November 9th. The Tigers beat the Tide two years ago in Tuscaloosa, and they had them beaten last year in Baton Rouge before AJ McCarron became Tom Brady in the final seconds. This will be yet another war that should decide the West, the SEC, and possibly the national title.

Pretty wild that the expectation is a national title every year, and that the expectation is reasonable at the same time

Gonna be a tough one. This game will be hyped to no end and it should be. This may be one of the most watched college games ever. Surprised this hasn't been moved to 7PM. Gonna set the tone for the season. This game will become what UF-UT was in the 90's as that early season game that sets the table. I remember back then you didn't miss UF-UT and this will be the same. This is what it's all about. Man, I love these games like this.

If you're referring to Bama/A&M I disagree. They caught you guys napping last season but from here on it'll just be like Arky/Bama used to be early in the season.

In about 5 years the narrative will be more like "Can A&M finally get over the hump against Bama?"

disagree. Bama is built to stop LSU. LSU is more built to stop A&M. A&M is set up to give Bama fits. I think the differing styles in the West really make it interesting. The clash will always make these games exciting.

And unlike Arky, A&M has recruited well enough to stay in that group. People too quickly forget that A&M did what we did last year with pretty mediocre recruiting classes (09 - 27th, 10 - 17th, 11 - 36th, 12 - 16th). With 13 - 9th and 14 looking top 5, the talent level is going to be much higher in the future. That's something Petrino for all his success was never able to put together at Arky. You may want us to go away, but I don't think it's going to happen.

The fans aren't paying any attention to A&M. Saban will smite the Aggies for their transgressions.

He's talking about LSU.

SOOOOOOOOO agree here. I actually feel a little sorry for A&M. Given time to prepare, Bama is probably going to have a field day. I will say that A&M's offense may do something, but with all this time to prepare and a few warm up games, Bama should take that one.

Additionally - there is a for Bama bye week prior to LSU. That doesnt make me feel better about the game, but we have a bye too and its later in the season. Should be a great game.

Not only do we have a bye before Bama, but we play Furman before the bye week, so we essentially have two full weeks to prepare for Bama.

LSU's biggest challenge is finding the happy medium between conservative Les and reckless, gambling Les. He was way too conservative on 1/9, and we lost because of the vanilla game plan. We had an awesome game plan last season, but he was way too ballsy on a number of calls, and we lost because of that.

The Bama/LSU game is a coin flip almost every year.

It is the key game because its early in the season. If we had LSU early, then that'd be the key game.

Win the A&M game and we should still control our destiny.

Meh. You caught Bama after a tough LSU game and got out to a quick 21 point lead. And they still almost won.

I do agree that the differing styles in the West make it interesting, but there is a reason the West comes down to Bama-LSU every year. A&M feasts on teams with lesser talent, but has been stopped by good defenses.

A&M needs a better defense and at least a decent running game if you want to keep up with Bama and LSU every year.

A&M will need to make Bama play catch up again this year. Otherwise we will take long ball controlling drives and keep Manziel on the sideline as much as we can.

I will say that the Bama D last year, while great was not up to the standard for the highest level that Saban has set for us. We seem to have a 1 off 1 on thing going as far as the defense is concerned. (the 1 off d's are still nasty though). We have young players this year who are expected to step up and have the talent to do so. If they come together properly look for a D more similar to 09 and 11 instead of 10 and 12.
