2. South Carolina: When the numbers got crunched, this became the most surprising selection in the entire Position U series. The Gamecocks barely edged Ohio State and LSU to be No. 2 at DBU. A case could be made that other schools have more prominent defensive backs than South Carolina. But check out this list of solid starting defensive backs who enjoyed good NFL careers: two-time Pro Bowler Johnathan Joseph, Dunta Robinson, D.J. Swearinger, Stephon Gilmore, Chris Culliver, Captain Munnerlyn, Fred Bennett, Ko Simpson, Sheldon Brown and Andre' Goodman. The depth is remarkable for a program not often associated with DBU. Now can Will Muschamp, a defensive-minded head coach, tap into this history with the Gamecocks?

OH MY GOD!!!
The hours I spent on here arguing with LSU fans about who is really DBU are all for naught?
Dang it!!!
Any takers on the UF=DBU tank top I had custom made?

Not sure that will get people to bite as much as showing Texas at #1.
The biggest difference though is UF and LSU have been much better recently. If they do this exact same poll five years from now, I would expect those two teams to clearly be at the top.

I think if you count the number of threads regarding Texas being DB U, with threads comparing who the SEC DB U is, you'll see why I didn't focus on Texas being #1.
And USC has Will Muschamp as it's HC, who may be debated endlessly here on how good of a head coach he may be, but no one has ever debated his ability to recruit and coach defenses and secondaries in particular. UF "has been much better recently" most likely because their previous HC was Muschamp himself. I can't see how that bodes well for UF in the immediate future now that Muschamp is at USC. I mean, who the frick is UF's DC now, anyways? And as for LSU, Chavis is now at Texas A&M, and his replacement didn't fare too well....

USCe can absolutely be a powerhouse in college football. Clemson just made the Natty and gave Alabama a whale of a game. The talent is there.
Is the coaching there?

What I looked at was the # of pro bowls, # of 1st-round draft picks, and # of total draft picks. USC trailed pretty much all the others in every category.
Then I looked at # of NFL Starts. USC trailed only Texas. Our DBs step up where it matters most. I'm sure that's what the CBS writer that compiled this comparison also noted. Other school's DBs get hyped up by the tradition of their programs, and get picked as a matter of course. Then they somehow seem to fall by the wayside, while USC's DBs race on by...
