But after a season in the football wilderness now Vandy fans can rest easy. Because Derek Mason has found the piece of paper that he lost last season.

"I had a sheet that I had been looking for for the last 18 months," Mason said. "Lo and behold, about two weeks ago, it popped up. I found it in my library of football books."

What he found was a detailed list of game situations and what he should do in each of them. According to his timeline, he had it when he accepted the job at Vanderbilt last January (or shortly thereafter). He was without it, though, when the Commodores went 3-9 and failed to win an SEC game for the first time in five years.

"I had already gone through that list and really remembered a couple of items on there that needed to be checked off," Mason said. "Now, I feel really good about what we're doing and where we're at."

If the Onion were writing an article about a bad football coach it would include this detail -- that he's found a sheet of paper that will solve all the issues he faced last season.

This has already been discussed on here. The main point is that the line about "really remembered a couple of items" is a misquote. Mason had actually said, "I had already gone through that checklist and really remembered -- but there was really, really a couple of items that needed to be checked off."

So, yeah, basically, CDM made a light-hearted comment about finding a certain physical copy of a list. That physical copy had been missing, but the list itself had, for all intents and purposes, been recreated. Without knowing the exact contents (but going by what he said about it and the context of the question), the list is likely a checklist for pre-game routine and cheat sheet for a few situations that he wants to address a certain way. Every coach has one. This is a non-issue blown out of proportion because Mason has made dumb comments in the past, and this "journalist" misquoted and misrepresented the comment.

The local media was having a field day with this today and should. What a dumb thing for an sec coach to say. They need to get rid of this clown he has been terrible on every level.

I'm fine with the jokes, but if anyone thinks Mason was actually serious, the joke is on you. He made a light-hearted comment then was promptly misquoted and misrepresented by local media.

He's talking about Vandy's football team. Sheet is a phonetic spelling of shite.
