Can an AUA fan discuss why you're upset about UAB?

I need an explanation. Is this a serious anger or just a thinly veiled criticism of the football powerhouse that is UA? Are you genuinely concerned you won't be able to see UAB football anymore or just upset because somehow you think this is Saban's fault that UAB football was losing money annually?

I can't believe UAB has generated this many posts on the rant. Maybe we should invite them to the SEC along with Louisiana-Lafayette. That would solve all their problems.

I couldn't give less of a crap about UAB except to say that it sucks for the players there.

1) college athletics are worth being reasonably subsidized
2), the Athletics dept. as a whole is losing money, not the football program
3) the study done was based off of old data and disingenuous assertions. The biggest of course saying saying that "UAB will lead CUSA in the director's cup" when UAB can't participate in CUSA athletics without a football program.
4) the study neglects to mention the 2 mil in broken contracts UAB will owe.
5) UAB AD will continue to be subsidized 20 mil a year even without football.
6) What is the X factor for the rise in cost? Scholarships for the entire are expected to rise from 7 to 10 mil from last year to next year. Expected coaches salary from 11.6 mil to 13.4. It's razzle dazzle. They're projecting a 7 mil a year increase in expenses. Why is the recruiting budget going from 500k to 700k? This isn't about saving money. It's about relocating it. That's why they're shutting down three programs and adding fricking track and x country.

I am genuinely pissed. Lifelong resident of Birmingham and supporter of UAB and its athletics. I went to my first UAB football game in 1997 when I was 6 years old and I'm mad and I'm mad I can't see UAB football anymore, especially now as they were gaining momentum. More importantly this hurts UAB, which hurts the whole city of Birmingham. I take it personally as an attack on my hometown.

For everyone crying about UAB football, I have a solution for you. Pull together and throw 17.5 million dollars a year at it, every year and it will keep going. Oh, and by the way don't forget to throw in an extra 100 million to build them a stadium to play in, and another extra 50 million for practice facilities and weight rooms and equipment and uniforms and staffing. This should not be a problem for you guys as strongly as you feel about letting them continue playing football. Go ahead. Get it done. Right now. If everyone crying so loudly about it had packed that crap-hole Legion Field every damn Saturday for the last ten years. That didn't happen, nor will it ever happen. 15 k is the biggest crowd UAB could ever hope to see at a home game. They need 70 k or more weekly and that is just NEVER going to happen. I mean to say not even if Birmingham spent 100 million on a new stadium and made the facilities as nice as they could make them, no crowd over 15 k would show up. Ever.

I don't care. They were wasting money...

Truth is....if uab focused on the vicinity and basketball...they'd still not sell a home game in football.

Doubt that crowd would have been there if there were no rumors of the football team shitting down.

Anyways attendance is secondary to the TV contract that the conference negotiated.

Excuse my ignorance but if i am following the story correctly, UAB football program was living off the generosity of Alabama (monetarily). Alabama has decided not to give any more money towards a program that is losing money. Therefore they are shutting down the football program. Is this accurate?

This is the gist of the faux Auburn angst over UAB in a nutshell.

Then why aren't the citizens of Birmingham doing anything about it?

Because 55 is more than 44. And don't, for one second, believe it's for any other reason.

I feel for the players that are there.

The disingenuous ramblings of fans who really just want some reason to paint Alabama as the villain in all this have soured me from being able to side with UAB anyway.

We are.

I expect this to be rectified quickly. Honestly, I believe this is a political ploy to get the domed stadium.

It is a public institution doing something that is contrary to the best interests of Birmingham and the state for disingenuous/bullshite reasons, and the citizens have no recourse. That makes me upset.

The BOT has quashed every opportunity UAB has had.

UAB has a contract with Jimbo...BOT won't approve it;

UAB makes big push for on campus stadium because Legion Field is a dump...BOT won't even vote on it

The BOT and the President decided a long time ago that they were shutting this thing down, and went and made up some numbers to back it up. Read the report. Pretty clear what they wanted. Asked the coaches for a wish list of facilities and then used that as "future costs." Nevermind that those facilities didn't actually have to be built and would also be partially financed via donations, if they were built at all. Also assumed the costs would go only up in the program; could not be cut even to save the program...Completely ignored what sort of value is added by the money that is put into the program; completely ignored that this will mean UAB will have to leave Conference USA. In short, they decided what they wanted and made it up to get there...

UAB football might not make much (if any) money...but it does better than most schools do. In any case, it adds way more in value to the school and the city than it is costing to run it. I just cannot fathom how this is in UAB's, Birmingham's or Alabama's best interest.

Do you really care? I only care enough to comment about not caring.
