Calipari has won me over. One heckuva coach

I'm still not that crazy about the "one and done" but that isn't a rule just for Kentucky. Any team has the opportunity to sign a guy who is almost NBA ready knowing full well there's a 99.9% chance he won't be back the following year (see: Louisiana State: Simmons,Ben)
Still to bring in the inordinate amount of talent they do every year and get 18,19 yr olds who thought the world revolved around them until they get to Lexington to play as a team and buy into the system is amazing. And then basically do it all over again the following season.
Certainly I've always thought the guy was a good coach, but to create almost a new team every year and get the results he does is amazing.

He has to rebuild every year. I don't know how he does it.

He certainly has his detractors and some will argue he's underachieved. But if you compare his stats to his peers he's incredibly consistent in keeping Kentucky in the conversation for a NC every year. And that's really all you can ask when a 64 team tournament determines your sport's champion.

Cal does what few can do. He literally has a new team each year. They will be losing around 8 players this year alone.
It can be frustrating as a UK fan, but generally the team wakes up and clicks around tourney time. UK fans have to accept that as long as Cal is there, it will be this way. Loads of talent in the door, but going back out as quickly.
But, as we saw Sunday, a young team playing a more veteran team usually struggles.

Yes they do struggle when they foul your stars to riding the bench. Even after all the weird foul calls UK was still standing. Damn scrappy team! I'm not a fan of Calipari, but he is a great teacher to some great HS talent who has to check their ego at the door. Great year UK!

It is impressive that he can get them to gel in the short period of time he has them but there literally is never a moment that he doesnt have a vastly superior team talent wise. So, i guess i think he underachieves too. The 1 and done rule is ridiculous

I don't see how you can claim Cal has "vastly superior talent" to programs like UCLA and UNC.

No knocking Cal, but this gets too much hype, imo.
Even a coach with the most experienced team is replacing at least 20% of his lineup and rebuilding team chemistry every year. With 5 starters , its a lot easier to build when your materials are all 5* McDonalds AA

Not a fan of Cal or Kentucky. But, I am definitely a fan of Fox. That kid is amazing. It hurt to watch his postgame interview. He was hurting big time.

Ya but getting them to buy in every single year is tough

Cal has been pretty outspoken his first concern is for the kids and their future, and less about UK's pursuit of titles. It does rub fans the wrong way at times.
But, you generally don't win titles without a wealth of talent (might change this year), so it's get the talent and hope it works.

This... Certainly might have some guys with higher ceilings, but we're not talking about a giant talent gap between UK and the other elite programs. Plus a lot of that "talent" is based on potential... maturity is a component of talent as well...
I don't love Cal by any means, but to say that he underachieves is discounting what he does quite a bit. I was actually really impressed with one of his talks he gave during the football season last year talking about how UK basketball scholarships are for life and the percentage of athletes that are coming back to finish their degree afterwards...

While on The Herd with Colin Cowherd, Calipari said his job is to help players be their best and reach their individual goals, which, for most of his team, is to be a professional basketball player and change their families' lives. But that comes through teamwork and leads to wins.
“We’ve got the kind of kids that understand they all have dreams,” Calipari said. “It’s not just one or two guys. They all do. My job is to help them be the best version of themselves, understanding that there’s implications here. This is not for funsies. This kid’s not going to become an accountant when the year is over. This kid has a chance to be drafted and be a pro, and my job is to help that along. If it’s after one year, two years, three years, four years, it doesn’t matter how long it takes.
“That is what my job is. No. 1 job. People at Kentucky may not like it. ‘Your job is to win national titles.’ No it isn’t. No it isn’t. My job is to prepare these kids as best I can. They drag us to where we want to go. If we love them and we’re about them, they will be about each other, because someone has their back. They don’t have to worry about it. They trust, ‘He has my back. I don’t have to worry about this.’ If they don’t think so, they’re trying to get numbers.”
Calipari’s team is loaded with high school All-Americans, but the players and families in the recruiting process know what they're getting into.
“What if your son were a top-five pick, and I was playing them 22 minutes and giving them nine shots a game?” Calipari said. “How would you feel? … That’s how these parents think. That’s why people can’t believe that this happens. How in the world? Because the parents and these players allow it to happen. It isn’t me. I am not a genius. They allow it to happen, and they allow it happen because they do trust that we have their back, that we’re trying to do right by them, that I will never throw a player under the bus. Will never happen. I’ll take responsibility. They’re 19 years old. Are you kidding me?”
Interview is from about 2 years ago, but he's said this numerous times... Cal dgaf about your standards or metrics.

Calipari has made the final four 4 times in 9 years, won a national title, finished runner up his 2nd year, and made the elite 8 2 other times. That's 6 top 8 finishes in 9 years. Really impressive in a tournament setting that begins with 64 (68) teams.

He always has 5 nba players on his team. Most teams don't. He is a good talent developing coach for sure but he recruits top notch so its hard to tell because the guys he gets are always the top ranked players in the country. Hes had so many lottery. Alot more than the kansas, north carolina, dukes of the world

I have always been a Calipari fan even when he was at UMass and Memphis. I knew getting the UK job was a marriage made in basketball heaven.

I've come around to liking him also. I enjoy his interviews and comments...

Cal doesn't believe that and that's not what Kentucky pays him for.
Sounds good and call but nobody is buying that.
