Cal thinks calling more fouls, not changing the shot clock, is needed

When asked about how to improve offensive flow and scoring in college basketball, Cal identified physical play and fouling as the main culprit. He suggested that a dedication by officials to calling fouls and reducing contact would increase offense and scoring, but that it would take officials, players and coaches 2-3 years to fully adjust to officials calling a tighter game.

Why even play the game. Let's just have a free throw contest.

I agree with him about not changing the shot clock, but I've seen games this year where too many fouls are called. Tacky calls piss me off to no end. Same with bailout calls.

Great idea, let's ask the biggest cheater in the game what we should do.

That's just dumb as hell. The shot clock obviously needs to be the same as the pros. That would be a good start, and change the fouls to six/game.

The easiest change to the college game that would improve the play the most, IMO, is to modify the way that the charge is called.

20 years ago, a player had to have completely established defensive position in order to draw the charge. It has evolved into a defensive tactic to force a turnover. A charge should be called only when an offensive player gains an advantage over a defensive player with established position.

It's exciting to see players attack the basket. It's exciting to see players show their athleticism. It's not exciting to see a team with a numbers advantage on a fast break get called for a player control foul because the defender slides under him while he's leaping for the basket.

It would open up the game, and encourage athleticism.

I don't want the shot clock changed. I LOVE the fact that college basketball can be a battle of opposite philosophies where an "underdog" athletically can still win with better execution.

Yea cal isn't the best person to ask about this. They need to start calling the games better, less tick tack hand checks 40 feet from the goal, less foul calls when the offensive player goes up with a circus shot, stop calling fouls when a guy jumps into the defender. They could call more fouls on the defense when its a legit call but just calling the game tighter isn't useful.

I could live with a compromise between 24 and 35... maybe a 28 second shot clock? That feels about right. And I do think they need to call more fouls. Bilas gave a great interview last week about how basically every statistic has ebbed and flowed with the lone exception of fouls. Apparently, no matter how much teams foul, the same number is going to be called (on average, over the course of a season).

He's right. And I'd prefer reducing fouls per player to 4, not increasing it to 6.

Louisville-style play has killed college basketball. It will continue to deteriorate as long as they let it.

Funny he would say that since all his teams do is drive and hope to get fouled.

Couldn't disagree more. They called 55 fouls in the Auburn-Arky game and it was miserable. I would stop watching if that were the norm.

Re-watch the Arkansas-Auburn game and tell me if you really want more fouls.
