We are travelling to the South for the Alabama @ LSU game on November 3rd. We start our trip in Birmingham and are headed to Baton Rouge from there.

We plan to drive on Friday the 2nd, and have reservations that night in Baton Rouge.

I am looking for some advice:

How long a drive is it?

What route should we take?

What stops along the way do you recommend (we plan to stop in Tuscaloosa for sure)?

Road trips are fun IMO, but should we just grab a cheap flight to NOLA?

Any other general advice?

Thanks

Best advise I got is pack your Kevlar. BR and NOLA are a couple of battlefields right now.

It took me 5 1/2 hours exactly to get to Hoover for the tournament from BR, and 5 1/4 hours to get back. Both were without any traffic. Try to schedule your arrival in BR for no later than 2-3 PM.

59/20 all the way to I-12, then straight west on 12.

There's nothing much on the way. Mississippi is a depressing wasteland.

No reason to, unless you plan on staying around there for some time.

Probably around 6 hours

I'd say go through Tuscaloosa>Meridian>Hattiesburg>Gulfport>Slidell>Hammond then to BR

Gumps should be able to tell you more, but if you have a few hours to spare, i'd really recommend Dunn's Falls near Meridian..beautiful waterfall cascading from an old mill down to a river. Also there is a fishing pond up top by the entrance with some nice sized bass, bream and catfish if you like to cast out a line.

I'd personally recommend you stop in NOLA on your way back or stay in NOLA on friday night then drive to BR the next day, only about an hour's drive from Tiger Stadium

It's about a five to six hour drive, give or take, and depending upon how many times you stop along the way.

There's really not a whole lot to see along the way, save for Tuscaloosa. Thr stretch from Tuscaloosa to just outside NOLA is pretty brutal.

It s interstate the whole way.

6.5 hours on I-20/I-59

I recommend no other stops, because there is nothing between Tuscaloosa and BR.

I'd drive it, but I'm a cheapskate.

Watch out for police outside of Birmingham.

From Bham: 20-59 south(turns into 59 south) to i-12 to Baton rouge is the only way to go.

Tuscaloosa is really your only "fun" stop.

Takes about 4 1/2 to 5 hours.

Be sure to take i-12. No NOLA.

also try using GOOGLE MAPS!!!!

To echo the others, you'd be best served to take I-20/59 South/West out of Birmingham to Meridian.South of Meridian the two split and you'd take I-59 South to its terminus near Slidell,MS and then you'd take I-12 West into Baton Rouge.

The drive (and I've done it maybe 250 times over the last 32 years)is incredibly boring. Not even some "world's largest rubber band ball" or something to detour to. Meridian and Hattiesburg do offer virtually any chain restaurant for dining and such but its one of the more non descript drives you can take.

The 5 to 6 hour drive is as exciting as a trip to the dentist.

Pulp wood truck between Meridan to Hattiesburg often slow the pace making it like a trip to a bad dentist

Yea,but halfway you can exit in Laurel and dine at Ward's before you get back on 59 and head to "new" bridge that is less crooked than the orginal one before the hospital.

My advice, if you booked one of the Hotels on College that claim "a short walk to Tiger Stadium" Call and cancel your reservation because it is a several mile walk through some Ghetto.
All those hotels are full of shite

His name alone adds validity to his post on this subject.

New Orleans is a somewhat different direction from where your coming from though.
BR is going to be nuts that weekend though. Truly will be a spectacle.

Loathe that drive. Watch out for state troopers near Mercedes exit just north of Tuscaloosa

I drive somewhere between 75-80 on average and it usually takes 5.5 hours or so to go from BR to the Ham because BR traffic sucks. It takes about 5.25 hours from the Ham to BR.

I agree with the poster who stated these times.

Souce: Have driven this route at least a dozen times.

Bring this tidbit up at lunch or whatever to your friends and they'll think you are really brilliant:

Did you know the Federal Highway Department's orginal route for Interstate 59 in 1957 had I-59 ending in New Orleans around what is now the Chef Hwy exit at I-10 and I-10 basically following US 90 along the water and I-12 ending in Slidell at I-59?

I've made the drive in right at 5 hours, stopping once for gas and a piss.

It's also taken me almost 7 hours once, involving torrential rain, multiple stops, and traffic.

The stretch between Meridian and Laurel is usually wrought with State Troopers.
