Some of these piss-poor performances came out of nowhere. Some of these teams were simply underachievers when all was said and done.

FLORIDA - from 2011-14 the Gators were amazing. 3 Elite 8's and a Final Four. But losing games late to Butler and Louisville with a Final Four berth on the line, and a no show against Michigan have to sting. If that wasn't enough, a terrible performance against UConn in the Natl Semis capped the careers of an outstanding class.

ALABAMA - The Tide rose to number 1 in the nation, this after a conference title in 2002. They damn near missed the tourney in '03 and lost an 8-9 game to Indiana. I nominate this for a season long choke.

SOUTH CAROLINA - What's worse? Winning an SEC title in '97 and earning a 2-seed only to get housed by 15-seed Coppin State, or following that up with another first round exit in '98 against 14-seed Richmond? What the hell happened here?

OLE MISS - a stunning run to a conf. tourney title and some first round upsets gave the Rebs a clear path to the Sweet 16 in 2013, except
LaSalle didn't get the memo. Marshall Henderson's swag couldn't carry Ole Miss far enough.

LSU - a couple of John Brady's finest performances came in 2003 and 2005. Purdue absolutely crushed the Tigers in a 8-9 game in '03, and UAB pretty much did the same, albeit as a 11-seed, two years later. It's hard to believe this was the same coach who took a team to Indy in 06.

South Carolina sports in a nutshell, 2 years of baseball excluded.

And then Gottfried takes a less talented team to the Elite Eight the next year. Pretty much sums up his tenure. Never did well with expectations.

Did Fogler lose the team somewhere along the line? Not one, but two losses like that seem inexplicable.

I was in Birmingham for that one to watch MSU. I would say us losing to Butler that day was a bigger choke (5 losing to a 12).

Ole Miss/Valparaiso is another one.

Some upsets I wouldn't automatically call a choke. Valpo did ride their momentum into the Sweet 16. I don't remember too much about MSU and Butler. Was that a Stansbury team? Didn't someone also mention that some funny stuff went down in the MSU Final Four game against Syracuse. I forgot all about Richard Williams.

LSU has had some really, really bad ones. Navy in 1985 as a 13 beating us 78-55, UTEP mopping the floor with us in 1989. Last years epic meltdown with NC State needs some mention.

Kentucky's loss to Middle Tenn in 1982 and destroyed by Western Ky deserve consideration.

Tennessee losing by 30 to SW Mo State as a 5 vs 12 in '99; Alabama getting waxed by Lamar in 1983 and Vandy losing to Sienna in '08.

Ole Miss and South Carolina make the tourney so infrequently its hard to pick on them.

Tennessee losing in 1976 with Ernie and Bernie vs
VMI of all teams, may be the worst.

Last year's choke vs NC St made me sick to my stomach. Missed 18 straight shots to end the game (12 FGs and 6 FTs), and lose by 1.

Of the ones you listed, only South Carolina really hits the radar as a huge "choke in the dance."

The others you listed were:

Florida as a 2 seed losing to a good Butler team (8 seed) in the Elite 8
Florida as a 7 seed losing to a good Louisville team (4 seed) in the Elite 8
Florida as a 3 seed losing to a good Michigan team (4 seed) in the Elite 8
Florida as a 1 seed losing to a good UConn team (7 seed) in the Final 4.

None of those really register as huge chokes. Every team Florida lost to was damn good.

Alabama as a 10 seed losing to Indiana as a 7 seed (not a choke, not even an upset)

Ole Miss as a 12 seed losing to La Salle as a 13 seed (Not a choke)

LSU losing a 8/9 game (clearly not a choke)
LSU losing a 6/11 game (not really a huge choke either)

Fogler lost the team after the 1998 season. He put so much emphasis on getting Kevin Garnett or Jermaine O'Neal on campus that he forgot to recruit other players.

Both of those guys were from SC and went straight from High School to the pros. Didn't really have any effect on those two losses in the dance, but the program went on a steep decline after.

true in theory, but I think his point was LSU's performance in those games was just horrible.LSU and Purdue were actually tied at halftime and Purdue won by 24. UAB built a 26 pt lead in '05 before LSU made it respectable.

That was back while that voodoo bitch's chicken curse was still in effect.

Spurrier exorcised that crap ... it's gone now, gone for good.

That bastard Pitchfork Ben Tillman's statue needs to be taken down from the statehouse grounds and sent back to taterhead land.

A 4 seed losing in the first round by 21 points to a 13? Yes, I think that qualifies...

The Bama loss to IU in and of itself wasn't a choke, but the season as a whole was. The table was set for that team to kick arse.

It reminded me of that Texas team that reached #1 in 2010, then ended up losing an 8-9 game to Wake at the buzzer because they couldn't hit free throws.

I disagree about Florida being "amazing" from 2011-14. Only their 2014 team was close to that.
