NORMAN — Oklahoma junior defensive end Charles Tapper left the Sooners’ 45-33 win at West Virginia last weekend in the fourth quarter because of exhaustion brought on by his sickle cell trait, coach Bob Stoops said during Monday’s news conference.

Sickle cell trait is a genetic disorder that can be catastropic, especially during extreme physical exertion.

California defensive end Ted Agu died in February during a training run, and it was reportedly because of complications from sickle cell trait.

If anyone still doubts that Bielema's attitude towards the HUNH isn't about player safety, you need to wake up and stop being so cynical.

Yep, nothing to do with the medical condition he has, nothing at all.

Pretty sad how you hog fans try and use injuries/illnesses to try and make some stupid point.

Maybe people with genetic disorders that put them at risk shouldn't be playing sports. I don't see how you can put this on anyone other than the individual and their doctors. They understand the risks of their condition and are willingly taking a risk by playing.

Except that Bielema has been bringing up sickle cell this whole time.

And, are you trying to make the point that it wasn't the sickle cell that was the problem, it was the offensive system? It sure looks that way, and it sure makes you look like an idiot.

It was a combination of the two.

I distinctly recall Bert mentioning sickle cell and the hunh, and the problems it would cause.

Fellow Hog fans must cringe whenever they see him post anything at all.

Good grief. Link? From what I can tell, it was the sickle cell that caused issues here.
