Longevity counts for something in and of itself, though. You don't have to extrapolate and guess at how well a coach would do over a certain time frame. The coach has proven how he could perform over the extra X number of years. There's no guarantee that a dominant coach's success wouldn't wane if his tenure were stretched out. See: Bobby Bowden for an example of a coach that coached too long. For that matter, see the dominant run the Bear had toward last third of his career for a couterexample. The only way to safely predict if Coach A would remain as dominant as Coach B did is for Coach A to actually coach those extra years.

I'm not picking a winner, incidentally, just making an observation. They're both extremely impressive.

I can understand that, but Skip made the CWS 11 times, in his 18 years, and only missed the tournament twice. And it's not like LSU was a power when he took over.
Not to mention, 5 titles, in 10 years.
And I'm not trying to discount Augie's accomplishments, at all. His longevity, at a high level, is very impressive.
I don't think there is a right, or wrong answer, when deciding which is better. It's JMO, that Skip is better than Augie. I still say they are only fighting for 2nd best.

No doubt Skip can claim a dominant run like few other coaches in any sport. When it comes down to it, ranking coaches at their level at all is like choosing between Mary Ann and Ginger. They both have their own appeal, and if you're stuck on an island with the Howells, the Professor, Gilligan, and the Skipper as your only alternative, you won't kick either one out of bed. You'll chain them there, in fact.

That metaphor made sense when I started typing, then something went very wrong. The gist is, ranking them is a fun speculative sport, but both have more than earned the right to be considered purely on their own merits.
