I enjoyed watching every Sunday. Coach Bryant's hour long show was followed by Coach Jordan's hour long show.

The entertainment portion of both shows was the "getting off track" stories both would tell.

Replays of the game would continue on the screen but we would hear about talking to a player's momma, going hunting, meeting an old friend, etc.

"You're so right Carl" was Coach Jordan's signature statement on his show. Carl Stephens was the host and stadium announcer.

It was absolutely great.

These were the only highlights you would get back in the day other than the local news. In the days before VCRs and ESPN if you wanted to see the big plays you had to wait and watch these shows

Those shows were gold. Its really a shame that younger Alabama fans didn't get to see these other than an occassional Youtube clip.

Charley Thornton was the unsung hero of those shows. When they'd show a giant picture of some guy who was say, #45 or #45 would make a tackle, Bryant would say "fine tackle by John Smith." Thornton would say, "coach that was Bill Jones. John Smith graduated two years ago."

Bryant would grin, take a swig of Coke and say, "Cholly, you coachin' this team or am I?" Thornton would deadpan, "you are,Coach."

Amazed he was sober enough to film on a Sunday. They must have taped really early in the day.

Great days. Back then you could only be on twice or 3 times and only ABC televised games so outside of Auburn, UT and whatever our big non-conference game was we didn't see Bama play. No youtube or ESPN so the only way to see the team was the coaches show.

Every sunday afternoon at 3 I believe, We lived close to Georgia and TN so at night we would get the Vince Dooley and the Bill Battle show as well.

Charley Thornton would get so aggravated. Bear was diagramming a defense at the start of a show that he used in the game and the philosophy and he was right in sentence saying "now when they split out this Tight end we would..." and Charley would interrupt and say "now let's get to the highlights coach" and just cut Bryant off.
After the 315 game Bryant was beaming and at the end of the show Bear said "it was a great win and now the Texas Longhorns"...and Thornton just jumped in "We'll see you after the Cotton Bowl for the review of the Alabama Texas game"

I loved those old coaching shows...I would love to see a spinoff thread with clips of old SEC coaching shows with the caveat...nothing later than 1979.

Here is The Johnny Majors Show from 1979 (UT vs Notre Dame)

All these years later I will still use that line when answering somebody. You are so right Carl.

Often he wasn't. That's why he couldn't remember his players' names.

Not even close. It's well known he was bad with names, and why shouldn't he be. Guy had between 120 and 150 scholarship players every year. I would never keep names straight under those conditions either.

Not responsible for your memory problems.

I watched the shows every Sunday for years - he was clearly inebriated more than once.

I was living in Pensacola at that time. Quite likely saw that show live. Probably watched the Doug Barfield show too. Pensacola didn't carry any of the Mississippi schools' shows so I would watch these. Back then, there were only a couple or three games on Saturday so you would soak up as much as possible with shows like these.

Seems ridiculous now with highlights running 24/7 on ESPN and others, but I always looked forward to the ABC review of big games on Sunday around noon. They would pick 5 games and spend a few minutes on each for I think a 30 minute show. It was kind of a big deal to be picked as one of the 5 games they reviewed.

Bill Flemming hosted those. They would generally announce at the end of the show which ones they would feature the following weekend.

Dave Diles and the Prudential College Scoreboard was awesome.
