Good article on the Great One and his feelings towards ND. It's good insight into how Bear felt he would be known as the man who couldn't beat ND.

Bear comes across as humble (not surprising) and Paul Finebaum comes across as well...insert own thoughts.

"You know what he said to me?" Holtz recalled last week. "He said, 'Aw, Coach, I'll be the guy who goes down as the guy who couldn't beat Notre Dame.' He wanted to beat Notre Dame so bad, and he could never do it."

Well he did beat ND once...

"The Saban universe is different than any other universe in Alabama history," Finebaum said. "I know that sounds funny considering Bryant, but most people were young when Bryant reigned.

"Everyone is excited about the magical matchup, but I have not run into many Alabama fans who fear Notre Dame. (They) respect it grudgingly but feel like they have the better team. And (they're) a little bit insulted that Notre Dame is in the game, on the same level as Alabama.

"It's kind of a new Alabama: We own the mountain, and what's Notre Dame doing at No. 1?"

No Surpise amongst SEC fans, I don't recall FL fans being so arrogant...but..

I've always wondered why some Bammers defend PF...he looks/ acts like more of an Ivy League radio host...he derides the passion of the Bammers (see 30/30 on Roll Tide- War Eagle).

Mistake on my part, Bear did or did not beat ND? Article says Bama is 1-5 vs. ND, so did Bear win the one or was that in 1941 or some other season

Bama finally beat Notre Dame in the 1980's. I don't believe Bear was still alive when they did. Bear lost all those games to Notre Dame during the segregation days.....Notre Dame was intergrated, Alabama wasn't.

I don't want to start a damn race thread. The 1960's were a much different America than today. Bear can and is considered an innovator to race relations and bringing intergrating the SEC. Good for the Bear on that one.

Race had nothing to do with it. Alabama was fully integrated when they first played ND in 1973. Quite frankly, ND just got lucky as hell.

well, that's surprising b/c didn't Bear only add Black players after USC crushed them in the 70's at home. It seems John Robinson did Bear a favor...

Alabama was integrated in 1980 when we lost to ND, 7-0.

ETA: Alabama first played Notre Dame in 1973. We were well on our way to integration by that time.

ND was definitely a team Bear couldn't seem to put in the W column. Ara Parseghian was a heckuva coach. Texas was another. Bama had a worse record against them. Hopefully, Bama will be fixin some thangs Jan 7th and start righting the wrong that has been lingering in the college football universe.

This is some bullshite. We already had a black player on the team when we played USC that year.

This is a popular myth perpetuated by ESPN and other media types. Alabama was already recruiting African-American athletes and already had a few on the team. They were freshmen, however, and couldn't play on the varsity team.

Did not. Perkins beat them in 86, the game where Biscuit had "The Sack" on Beurlein.

Like I said, it's a well traveled lie. Even people who KNOW it isn't true keep repeating the lie. I guess it makes them feel good or something.
