A few questions: Can someone explain what exactly is happening with TOPS? Is it being shut down completely or just reduced? When will these cuts go into effect? What sort of impact do you believe it will have on recruiting? State and Ole miss do fine without scholarships like this, just wondering if y'all are expecting any sort of impact on the athletic side. TIA

ETA: went to my first series at the box last year and had a blast despite 40 degree weather and 15 mph winds. We should've swept y'all

Why didn't you ask this in regards
to basketball?

Because you only get 11.7 scholarships for baseball and you need to try to field an entire team (30ish players) with that

Basketball allows 13 scholarships which is a full team

LSU baseball is like Bama football, there is always a hidden scholarship for our boys

I didn't realize basketball players could get partial scholarships based on academic merit like baseball players, and there generally aren't many "hidden gems" in basketball like you can find in baseball. It certainly helps when you can take a project from Lake Charles and have him on a 75% academic scholarship. Now if Houston wants him they have to allocate 75% of one of their allotted 11.7 scholarships (I think that's the number) while LSU doesn't have to burn that baseball scholly and can offer to a higher rated kid out of state. Does basketball work the same way?

There is an average of 16 players on the basketball team so one could imagine using TOPS for 3 good players.

Are you really failing to see how this helps in regards to baseball? You can offer a kid the same scholarship as an out of state program. It doesn't count against your baseball scholarship but it counts against theirs. The worst 3 players on any basketball team do not contribute in actual games. You need more than 12 guys to contribute in baseball

Tops is being reduced
There are baseball players that will pay their own way from LA to play at LSU.
Won't matter!

The bigger issue is why college baseball continues to be underfunded.

Basketball can give only full scholarships. Baseball can give partials, so Tops can make up the difference. Not really a factor in basketball, except for the occasional walk-on.

Seems like a racist policy against whites (yes, I know about Title IX)

I don't doubt that at all, but they'll certainly have something to think about now when good programs ask them to come play here for half the price. Let's not kid ourselves, college is expensive

Out of state tuition is expensive as hell too. I am assuming that gets waived for partial
scholarships?

Are you saying at LSU, or in general?

it's being partially cut, so it'll hurt to an extent. I don't think it'll be a deal breaker though for the majority of prospects. they typically come from upper middle class families anyway

It's never been addressed by anyone connected to the baseball program or the LSU administration in general, so there is no definitive answer at this point. The amount a La. student may receive has been reduced but as with any new law, it will take time for the smoke to clear to see how it effects baseball schollys.
