San Jose State has backed out of its 2010 football game at Stanford because of financial considerations and lined up a more lucrative game instead.

At Alabama.

The Spartans will receive approximately $1 million from Alabama — about five times the amount they would collect from playing at Stanford Stadium.

The additional revenue will "insulate" the football program from potential budget cuts by the California State University system, according to SJSU Athletic Director Tom Bowen.

"We decided to become proactive," Bowen said. "We're anticipating that in 2010 and '11, enormous budget cuts will come. We're not going to wait for the system to tell us what to do."

SJSU is not required to pay Stanford a cancellation fee, and the schools have rescheduled the game for 2014. (They are also scheduled to meet annually from 2011-13.)

The hole in Stanford's 2010 schedule could be filled by Sacramento State or another Football Championship Subdivision team.

ETA: I would rather them pay a million dollars to a team closer geography wise. I'm sure a southern team could use the money as bad as SJSU.

Cool. I can dig out my old San Jose State jersey with a 'California Bowl' patch I have from the 70's that I got at that old Russell Mills outlet store in Alex City about 20 yrs ago.

Why won't y'all play UAB ? You could at least help Saban even his record with them.

As far as a lesser-quality OOC opponent, this isn't a bad one. I'd still rather see us schedule a BCS opponent so that some of our Barner friends could de-wad their panties.

I beleive University of Alabama at Bham is 1-0 against the other one over near Mississippi.

UAB tried to schedule Bama in hoops throughout the 80's and 90's. The NIT finally put them together and I am pretty sure UAB spanked them.

Do you not remember? I am positive UAB tried for years to schedule Bama in b-ball and bama always said no. I am positive also they played in the NIT. I think UAB won, but not 100% sure.

Where is '59 to set the record straight with the details?

Very very unlikely it would ever happen. UAB does not make it to a bowl often and Bama is back on the upswing making it more unlikely.

That said, if bama could refuse it would not shock me.

I remember that. UAB students had Tshirts that had the score on the back. It had the teams listed as "UAB" and "UAT". They evidently stole the Tshirt making idea from Alabama and then Auburn stole the "UAT" idea from UAB.

Nah, not football. I can understand Bama not wanting to play UAB in football. Nothing to be gained from it. AU played UAB once and said they would not likely do it again.

Basketball is a different story though. Throughout the 80's and some in the 90's, UAB was just as good as Bama and Bartow tried every year to schedule Bama and Bama said no. They should have played. It was cowardly of Bama not to play them as UAB was often better under Bartow. AU played them every year and they had a really good rivalry.
