Bama fans, did Kirby's UNC defensive game plan look familiar?

Georgia's 3 or 4 man pass rush last weekend may work for teams with an NFL line, but it won't work consistently for Georgia this season. Even the occasional blitz was ineffective. Trubisky frequently had all day in the pocket and a more seasoned quarterback would have lit up the scoreboard. Hopefully CKS and Mel Tucker were holding back, because if they weren't we're headed for some high scoring games.

Yes, I'm especially worried about Nicholls State today

Georgia has more talent than 2007 Alabama, but we had some higher scoring games that year too. Took some time to implement the defense.

We had a game, did not see yours. I can say that it took us a while to recruit in enough guys to have pressure front. Ahead of that we depended on Erik Anders, Upshaw and guys like that to get off of the edge on third downs.

We will get better defensively as the year goes on but we are going to have some games where we will need to score 30+ to win.

Does he ever get aggressive with the pass rush? The fan consensus seems to be that we were trying to contain Trubisky from running, but he's not a huge dual threat IMO. In either case, I'd rather see a more aggressive defensive front, like Auburn used against Clemson. Granted, we don't have that kind of experience in the front 7 right now, but I hate seeing a quarterback have that much time.

I agree. Hopefully the passing game starts clicking and makes teams back off the LOS.

In that situation we contain and force the QB to win passing.

Wasn't Kevin Steele the DC in 07?

Once Kirby gets the depth he needs, it'll be game on. No worries, puppies, Kirby knows what he's doing.

Under Smart, I sometimes got aggravated when Bama wasn't being aggressive enough, especaily on 3rd and long downs. Watching QB's with all day on 3rd and longs was tough, and made me think of Javier Arenas, CB, bringing the wood while coming off the edge, on 3rd downs back in 2009. Or Bama's aggressive nature with that 2011 defense that didn't take names. Not sure who's decision it was to not be aggressive while Smart was DC Lately, but with the athletes Bama has got, Bama's defense could be devastating instead of efficient. You'll never find that out, if you don't let the players loose though.

Seems Pruitt had Bama's defense playing more aggressive against USC, but time will tell that whole story.

For as good as our defense has always been, it wasn't really until last year that we had a great pass rush (relative to how great the rest of the defense was of course). There was a long stretch of years where us fans would get somewhat frustrated with a lack of sacks, but Kirby/Saban always say it's more about "affecting" the QB than actually sacking him. And they obviously know better than I. But Georgia having an ineffective or conservative pass rush isn't a huge shock. It'll get better though, especially once he gets more future NFLers on the defensive line.

Agreed, Kirby almost always called a conservative / safe defensive game plan.

Until you get guys that can pressure on their own from the D-Line, just prepare to pucker on third and longs

I really don't see it with Kirby, think he's headed down the same path as Muschamp at UF.

Anytime you Kirby schemed against a mobile QB he always played contain. The fear of the QB running for a big gain is annoying. Its going to happen when you play so much man to man. I would rather really rush the passer and if he escapes he escapes. Giving someone 10 second to find the open man is more likely to give up a first down imo.

Well Kirby has one big advantage over coach Mac, he will never remind of you John candy when he laughs

Exactly, we (read Bama fans) argued a little internally about it for the entire time we had Kirby. Starting in 2010 and not really subsiding until last season, when the pass rush finally came on strong.

We were aggressive in 08 and 09. Blitzed from everywhere and the corner blitz was on point. The last couple of years we didn't need to blitz when four guys got the job done. Kirby isn't gonna let a quarterback sit there and get comfortable.
