Bama Effect might be real: Teams are actually getting worse after playing Tide

Percentiles are an effective way of measuring a team's performance (with opponent adjustments) in a single number. You can look at a team's schedule and quickly discern trends, highs, lows, etc.

Alabama's trends are, shall we say, strong. The Crimson Tide have played at the 80th percentile or higher in every game but one (you can guess the one), and after a bit of a dip against Texas A&M, they've improved for three straight weeks, from 80th percentile to 83rd to 88th (shutting down Leonard Fournette without overemphasizing him) to 95th (showing off a new pass rush by sacking Dak Prescott nine times).

I'm more interested in Alabama's opponents, however. The Bama Effect appears to be real. For all the attention Tide fans give to scheduling -- and how it kind of seems like every opponent gets a week off before playing Bama -- opponents should be more focused on getting a break afterward.

Let's look at conference opponents:

Ole Miss' average performance was in the 97th percentile in the two weeks before Bama and the 41st in the two weeks after.

Georgia's average performance was in the 86th percentile in the three weeks before Bama and the 41st in the three weeks after.

Texas A&M's average performance was in the 79th percentile in the three weeks before Bama and the 35th in the three weeks after.

For the season, LSU was averaging in the 84th percentile before Bama. Last week against Arkansas: 26th.

Arkansas and Tennessee appear to have immunized against the Bama Effect. Everybody else in the SEC: not so much.

Alabama's latest victim, Mississippi State, plays at Arkansas this Saturday.

It is physically and mentally exhausting to play the most talented team in the country, knowing it is likely your biggest game of the year.

Before we played Bama we were losing to shite teams like Toledo and Texas A&M. After we played Bama we started beating shite teams like lsu and ole miss

Thanks, Bama!

Well Arky is on one hell of a roll since Losing to Bama. Don't tell me they've had an easy schedule. Bama- don't flatter yourself. Wisconsin has gone 8-1 since losing to you. And their only other loss is to an undefeated team.

Getting worse because they weren't worthy of their lofty rankings to begin with.

this has already been well documented. teams lose after they play bama because of how physical they are in the trenches. I don't think bama is as physical as they have been in the past on offense but the defense is just as physical as it always has been.

Look you get props for beating LSU and Arky and Wisky. But eeking by Tennessee and a Mississippi State who played absolutely no one ( ranter's own words ) is where the eye test don't mean a thing.

Now at least you clamped down on Dak in the red zone, but your d was like that last year. Of course you gave up points in spurts last year, but overall was solid in the red zone. The long plays were back breakers for Bama last year. This year they've done a great job of eliminating those long plays. But the CFP is a different animal so we'll see if it continues. Should be a great run.

Baylor wasn't overrated. I'd take them over any team Bama has beaten, or lost to this year, by a wide margin.

I won't pretend they're amazing teams, but we beat the dog piss outta UK 52-21 on the road the week after the Bama game, in what many people thought would be a close game.

I think Bama isnt as equally strong on the offensive line mentally, but Bama has a back rushing for yards against tough arse teams...and yards, and yards.
