Alleva finally did something smart and didn't match Auburn's ridiculous offer to Steele. The real question is what exactly is wrong with Auburn? Their coach is on the brink of getting fired and they throw 4 million and a $500k buyout towards a coach that is average at best.

Well at the least we know LSU tried to keep him....

quote:

A high-placed source on the LSU football staff said the Tigers wanted to keep Steele and were, at least at first, attempting to work out a deal to retain the first-year coordinator.

It all took place at LSU’s team hotel in downtown Houston - a surreal scene capping the end of a wacky year.

For the second time in as many seasons, Miles was fighting to keep his defensive coordinator from the overtures of an SEC West rival

why'd you leave out this excerpt
quote:

Auburn and Steele's negotiations - days old - went beyond money, multiple sources confirmed, and LSU declined to get into a "bidding war" with Auburn for Steele.

doesn't seem like LSU was trying very hard to keep him

I didn't leave anything out. The whole story is in the link I provided. Bottom line is LSU tried to keep him but it didn't work. He left anyway.

Not matching a competing offer is the definition of not trying.

bottom line is LSU didn't care to match Auburn's offer. That, by definition, is not trying to keep him

I wasn't there. My guess is that Miles tried to get the moon to keep Steele and the brass at LSU probably wouldn't give him much additional powder to try and keep Steele. This is based only on the acrimony between Alleva and the Board and Les and the way this situation sort of played out today.

In all fairness, we were defending this same hire last year.
And if we can't find someone better, we shouldn't throw stones.
Don't troll Auburn. They're cool cats....

I downvoted the OP strictly because of your username and avatar.

Lemme see if you post anymore in this thread and I'll give you some more downvotes for the sentiment.

You don't even know that for certain. I assume it's true to some extent, but we have no idea what was in LSU's pitch to keep him.
