Media got tired of being wrong so they picked AU and 'Bama?

(I know there's some formula with the votes that made it like that... but still)

It was a voting quirk. More people voted Auburn to win the West, but it was close with Alabama. People just also voted Auburn lower than Alabama more often

Alabama received 92 first-place votes in the West, while Auburn collected 108. The Crimson Tide won the Western Division vote due to receiving just three votes for fourth place or lower in the Western Division, while Auburn received 26 such votes. Points were awarded on a 7-6-5-4-3-2-1 scale.

It basically means that the media can't decide who will win the West, but they know that whoever does will dick slap Georgia in Atlanta.

Basically Auburn got more first place votes, however there were a chunk of ballots that had Auburn pretty low, whereas Alabama was consistently very high on all the ballots, something like that.

Not that any of that shite matters, their predictions are historically terrible anyway.
