First off I'd like to say I am very, very impressed with your team. They run the ball extremely well and the defensive line is full of studs.

My question is what changed from last year? Is it just maturity on the player's part or the change in play calling by Lashlee? Is Steele motivating the defense better than Muschamp was?

What do you think has been the catalyst for this team?

Some HUGE freshman play from receivers and DLine (Marlon Davidson in particular), Sean White healthy, Carl Lawson healthy, better linebacker play.

Kicked Duke off the team WAY too late so the cancer had already spread imo.

Gus learned and kicked Javon off before it spread.

Better LB's

Deep healthy DL

Some freshmen contributing

SW maturing and healthy

Attitude with better team leadership

Gus growing up and maturing as a HC

Kozan back to full health

I'm sure there's more.

It is really an entirely new team. Very different lineup

Lots of young players are contributing on both sides of the ball

Very simple game play since game 3

Defense is winning us games. Keeping us ahead which is making the offense play with a simple game plan

We are not putting the game in our QB's hands. Look, Sean White is our best option and has been a very good game manager. I love how he is running the offense. But we have not been in a bind where we have to live by his arm. Our running game has done the job

Rhett Lashlee calling the plays (took over before LSU game)... Sean white stepping up... OL playing better... leaning on the inside run game.

QB- Sean White started to catch up with the speed of the SEC
RB- Peyton Barber didn't really read blocks well. Jovon Robinson was better but he was a headcase. KJ and KP have matured and read their blocks well
WR- Catching the ball better and blocking down field. Their coaching under Kodi Burns is better than Craig's coaching, IMO.
OL- Still needs improvement but switching Golson back inside has helped the OL a lot.

DL- Actually rushing the pass better in all games except for Ole Miss. They are taking on blocks. Carl Lawson playing makes a difference. Monty Adams is turning himself into a 1st round pick if he stays healthy from here on out.
LB-Since DL is doing their job, they have looked well improved. The young guys are getting production. Says a lot when the young guys force a All-Big 10 guy to ride the bench.
DB- Still have injury issues. Personally I think Carlton Davis is a bit overrated and Holsey is better CB, but that might be me. They playing average though because the pass rush helps them.

Special Teams- Daniel Carlson is still the best kicker but our kickoff coverage is suspect right now.

Coaching- Changing Rhett Lashlee is play calling has helped. Gus wanted to make JJ/ JF3 the starter, but it didn't work well. He also tried to turn Sean White into Nick Marshall or Cam, but that isn't him. Rhett calling plays for Sean White has been the best thing for him. He allows him to play to his strength.

Kevin Steele- Defense is going back to the basics and making sure they get hats to the ball and wrapping up has made the defense better. I'm sure he is just doing basic stuff with them at this time though.

Defense.

They kept hope alive while the offense struggled with an identity.

Our defense was exponentially better last year than the previous year. There were still some hiccups, but Muschamp definitely laid a good foundation.

We were rushing the passer well all game, but it's kind of hard to get a sack when Kelly rarely hung onto the ball for more than 1-2 seconds.

Talent is better on defense and coaching staff seems more cohesive.

QB play is much improved, as is play on both sides of the LOS. Team has confidence I haven't seen since 2014.

Lashlee is a better playcaller than Gus when Gus is trying to be the head coach. We actually threw a pass to a TE last night, which is a rarity after Uzomah graduated.

The biggest change has been Gus letting go of his 'genius' ego and taking a step back. He admitted to letting emotions affect his play calling, and handing the reigns over to Rhett has been the saving grace. I hope Gus now comes to the realization that his OC days are mostly behind him, and he needs to be more of a quality control guy instead of meddling too much with the X's and O's.

Defensively from what I've been told Steele simplified our defense to make the players feel more of comfortable and told them it's ok if you make mistake but make it going full speed.

My question is what changed from last year?

Marlon Davidson is a true freshman and playing almost ALL-SEC caliber on the line. This has freed up Mon Adams from all the double teams he got last year. And, of course, Lawson is healthy this season and finally getting a complete season (as a Jr.). Muschamp had the D playing pretty damn well by the last third of the season, culminating in a dominating performance against Memphis and their future NFL QB. Steele came in and picked up where Muschamp left off. He has continued their progression upward.

On offense, JJ has been benched. White can't throw the lasers for 50 yards JJ can, but he makes much better decisions and is more accurate on the short and intermediate routes. He can also run the ball when he has to (saved us last night on a critical 3rd down). And, of course, we discovered our 3 star recruit, Kam Pettway, was vastly underrated by the cruitin' services. He has turned into a beast that forces every LB and DB to make a business decision before tackling him. Almost 1,000 yards in 6 games.

Oh, and Lashlee seems to be the real brains on the offensive staff right now. Gus went full retard early in the year and wisely handed the play-calling duties over to him. Since then the offense has exploded.

Several things have happened. Gus stopped calling plays. We got rid of WRs the with the drops (mostly.) Dl play has greatly improved and 5 stars look like 5stars. And we finally have speed at LBer again. This has obviously been the main issue on our D since 2011, no SEC speed at lb.

Also, our best WR in the first three games was a white guy who originally walked on as a kicker.
