A big complaint from LSU fans regarding Les Miles was that he was squandering the best talent in the country. But Kevin Steele was unimpressive last year with the LSU defense. He's got the Auburn D playing lights so. Did Steele magically become a better coach in the last year or does Auburn just have better talent?

I think we have very different views of what "lights out" means.

Les Miles was still calling the plays that's why the Auburn defense looked good.

Clearly Auburn is better. I'm sure Tide fans are more concerned about them than the LSU game...

LSU 25 in defense.
Auburn 40.

Solid troll attempt tho. 6/10 effort.

Auburn's schedule is harder for the first 5 games.

I know it's early in the season, but AU defense @ #40 is fantastic ~ I don't think they've had a defense to sniff a ranking below #50 in years.

LSU's D last year > Auburn's this year

LSU's D this year > LSU's D last year

Auburn's defense is certainly improved. "Lights out" may be a bit of a stretch, but credit should be given to Steele considering all the bashing Auburn got when it was announced they had hired him.

Here is where Auburn ranks in the SEC through 5 games in various defensive statistics:

3rd- Allowing opponents' plays of 10+ yards
4th- Passing Defense
4th- 3rd Down Defense
5th- Total Defense
5th- Pass Defense/Attempt
5th- Red Zone % Touchdowns Allowed
6th- Sacks
7th- Total Defense/Play
7th- Rushing Defense/Play
7th- Red Zone Scoring Defense

Those are a lot of critical defensive statistics in which Auburn ranks in the top half of the league. Considering the dumpster fire that has been the Auburn defense the past 5 years, I'd say the turnaround has indeed been very impressive.

Auburn Total Defense Ranking by Year

2008- #29
2009- #68
2010- #60
2011- #80
2012- #81
2013- #87
2014- #66
2016- #71
2015- #40 (so far)

Yes, this is the first time since 2008 that Auburn has had a defense ranked better than #60.
