Big Boi's daughter and Jeff Foxworthy's daughter go to AU. Both of those celebs are frequent visitors to campus and financial donors (Foxworthy's daughter is in a sorority, too).

Kinda cool, but what's up with you UGA? Why are these kids shunning you?

There's a "you might be a redneck joke" somewhere in this...

More importantly why did they choose Auburn over Alabama? Auburn > Bama?

Because Auburn is the closest school with winning programs to Atlanta.

Probably can't get into UGA and thus go to Auburn and think it's some sort of private institution.

Auburn also does a good job of recruiting out of state suckers from the rich suburbs of large southern cities.

For decades, most Atlanta area kids who wanted an SEC school kind of college experience chose Auburn if they could not get accepted to Georgia. Auburn was often the #2 school of choice for most of the kids in the better high schools.

From my understanding though, more and more kids are choosing Alabama these days because Auburn has improved their academic standards and kids are finding it more difficult to get accepted into Auburn.

I think Auburn probably still gets more Atlanta area kids than Alabama, but Alabama is closing the gap.

Quite frankly, if kids just miss getting accepted to UGA, they go to Auburn. If they don't stand a chance of getting into UGA, they may not be able to get into Auburn, so they go to Alabama.

At least that's what many of my friends in the Atlanta area tell me.

Either way, Georgia is just too good of a school for many Atlanta area kids to be accepted. Having the Alabama schools next door provides those kids at least an SEC option.
