I'll be going to Dallas for the Bama/Michigan game on Friday, but I figured I'd checkout the campus of our newest division rival while I'm in Texas. I'm actually thinking about going back to school for another degree or a masters, so this was a another reason to go since I want to go out of state this time around. I'm actually leaving out of Baton Rouge on Thurs afternoon/early evening and will stay there for the night. (This plan actually worked out nicely considering Isaac will more than likely knock out my power at home for a day or 2)

I'm doing an early campus tour and have a few hours to spare before I head up to Dallas for a few days. Any suggestions on what to check out while I'm there? Places to go around town? I've never been and don't have as much time as I'd like to really get a sense of life in the area, but I figure 4-5 hours will be better than nothing.

Are you going to be staying over there Thursday night or are you just stopping in during the day?

Indeed

4 hours of sleep and combining 3 days of work into one day due to Isaac is not healthy for my grammatical skills

Driving over on Thursday and staying. Should be in town between 8-10 PM depending on traffic and weather conditions, possibly earlier if we leave sooner than expected.

I just left town for a job in Dallas or i would have been glad to show you around.

You should have a good time at northgate on a thursday night. you can park in the garage off of University drive, right behind the bars.

Go out Thursday night on Northgate, the large area of bars across from campus along University Ave. There's a ton of bars in a very small area so just take a cab there from wherever you're staying, walk around and go wherever looks cool.

From our visitor write up:

As for Bars on Northgate (there are around 30 bars in a 2 block area), my favorites are:

Corner Bar Rooftop -- 3 story bar with a Rooftop bar overlooking Northgate and Campus
Rebels Draft House -- 100 beers available including all the Abita beers
Cedar Lane -- Get the CedarAde and "Wake Me Up" --- fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck
Dry Bean Shot Bar -- 250 shots on menu that is an old Western Style Saloon
Madhatters -- 80s/90s Themed Bar
Logans -- 44 oz. tall beers
Basil Whippets -- Strongest Drinks on Northgate if you go to the 2nd floor bar
Schotzi's -- Live Music and a huge outdoor patio for drinking.
The Ranch -- Rooftop Bar as well
Zapatos -- Live Music in the Beer Garden
Church Street Blues & BBQ -- great food and live music
Tipsy Turtle -- Daquiri Bar, New Orleans Style

The campus tour should give you everything about the school you need to see. Here's a restaurant list we had for visitors before:

Restaurants/Local Eateries that I like:
Freebirds - Monster Burritos that you make yourself. On Northgate.
La Bodega - Great Baja tacos and tex-mex on Northgate.
Cafe Eccell - A little higher end, but wonderful food and award winning desserts on Northgate.
Kyoto Sushi -- Northgate
Atami Sushi -- University Drive
Antonio's Pizza - Boston Style Pizza on Northgate
Zapatos on Northgate -- Trash Can Nachos.... nuff said
Fuego -- 24 hour taco service -- drunk food, but wonderful, lots of tail running around here at 3 am.
Republic Steakhouse -- If you want an expensive dinner but really good steak, try here.
C & J's BBQ -- Texas BBQ
Rudy's BBQ -- See above
Koppe Bridge -- Best Burgers in town and the beer is ICE cold
Cafe Capri -- Higher end, but great
Christophers -- Higher end like Republic and an intimate atmosphere

Two others to add in that I like are Grub Burger Bar, really good nicer burgers on University Avenue. Probably my favorite burger in town now. And Fargo's BBQ is in Bryan and very good also. The Dixie Chicken is on Northgate and is the bar/restaurant you hear about the most in magazines and such

Appreciate the offer. Honestly, I'm not expecting this to be my last visit in town. I was considering making the trip over for another visit during the A&M/LSU game. I'm a Bama fan but lifelong Baton Rouge resident...so the dislike for LSU is somewhat higher than it is from Auburn compared to most Bama fans. I'll let you know if/when I make it back to town again.

Awesome list man, that definitely helps me out a ton. Good food is mandatory if I relocate to new locale, this list sounds amazing. Madhatters sounds like a stop for me; I'm still young (24) but do not enjoy blaring rap music that I have no idea who sings or what the appeal is. (though having said that, if the women are friendly enough, I'll adapt rather quickly. Have heard good things about Cedar Lane and Corner Bar rooftop too.

Grub is good for sure. But it's not something I'd call a "must do" for a first visit to College Station. Go to something more iconic. Or if you just want Texas food in general, definitely hit up Fargo's. Get the brisket and ribs and thank us later.

hell yes!

and if you are planning a visit/tour, call (979) 845-5851. The people there should be able to help with that. If i remember correctly, they like it if you schedule 2 weeks in advance, but "allow" 48hr notices. But you can also just show up and get added on to tours too. If they give you any issues just shout it here or something and ill call some people there and get it done.

Check out the Corner Rooftop for sure. That's my favorite place. Cedar Lane , O'Bannon's and Logans are some others that you'll probably like. Mad Hatters has a ton of co eds running around Northgate is a small enough area though you can walk around and see what looks good.

If you're there early enough you can find a place to watch our first game also. Corner and Rebel's will generally put up projection screens and should have a fair amount of people there. With the game that night and it being the first week of school there should be plenty people out Thursday night.

Freebirds has gone downhill, if it weren't for their queso I would also put chipotle ahead. They went corporate and lost a lot of luster. Sao's attraction to threads specifically about A&M is still going strong though, I see.

Fargo's is pretty much adding itself on the agenda with the hype it's gotten in this thread. Haven't had a good brisket in a long time, this sounds like a plan.

Actually, I set up my visit last Monday. Got in touch with their visitors center and got the details straight. It's kinda ironic I had already planned to get out of town before I even knew we had a hurricane heading our way. Looking forward to it though; I've always rooted for A&M when I see them playing so I'm looking forward to finally getting to visit. Definitely appreciate your help though, will let you know how the visit goes
