Rivals.com National Recruiting Director Mike Farrell and National Recruiting Analyst Adam Gorney don’t always see eye to eye. In this edition of Rival Views, the two debate who has the best secondary in college football.

FARRELL'S PICK: FLORIDA
I’m going to go with the Florida Gators here just ahead of Alabama and LSU. I think if Jourdan Lewis was healthy, Michigan would be in the mix as well. The cornerback combination of Jalen Tabor and Quincy Wilson is awesome, and it seems they haven’t missed a beat despite losing All-American Vernon Hargreaves III outside.
At safety, Marcus Maye will make you pay any time you come across the middle while Nick Washington is starting to emerge as well. They are just as physical, it seems, as when they had Keanu Neal patrolling the middle.
With two lockdown corners, there is no side to pick on. And with Maye stepping into that leadership role more than ever with Neal gone and bringing Washington under his wing, I don’t think there’s a foursome in the country with the same combination of coverage skills and physicality in run support. Throw in true freshman Chauncey Gardner for depth as well as Marcell Harris and Duke Dawson and you have an embarrassment of riches I don’t think anyone can compete with.

GORNEY'S PICK: ALABAMA
The SEC is loaded with outstanding secondaries, but I’m going to argue that Alabama – surprise, surprise – has the best one. My main point is that they have been tested twice already this season and absolutely lambasted their opponents.
In the season opener against USC, the Trojans passed the ball 37 times for only 18 completions and 130 yards. USC’s leading receiver Deontay Burnett had four catches for 26 yards. JuJu Smith-Schuster, one of the nation’s best receivers, was basically shut out with one reception for nine yards. One catch!
Last weekend against Western Kentucky - yes, it’s Western Kentucky, but the Hilltoppers put up 552 passing yards against Rice in the season-opener - Alabama allowed only 216 passing yards. Western Kentucky completed only 50 percent of their throws.
Those are strikingly impressive numbers as Alabama gears up for a double-revenge showdown against Ole Miss this weekend.
Former five-star CB Minkah Fitzpatrick leads the Crimson Tide in tackles. Three defensive backs already have interceptions.
Alabama is crushing opponents to start the season. The way this entire defense, but especially the secondary, is playing and dominating, that should continue into SEC competition.

Alabama's secondary is great, but its also much easier to cover WRs when you only have to do it for like 2 seconds. Their pass rush is going to lead to ridiculous pass defense stats.

Bringing in tosh lupoi was a great move, our pass rush took off when he started coaching for us. Plus he's a great recruiter

Opinions are like ... you know the rest.

It's a relationship of mutualism. In a vacuum I still think Alabama has the best secondary in the country. They can all run sideline to sideline, all defend the pass well, and they all tackle well in space and don't need help doing it.
Several good secondaries in this league but I don't think any have the talent of Alabama.

Because there are no random articles that will list LSU anywhere, right?

Lighten up Francis. I think we can all agree, at least the objective among us, that LSU does not have the best secondary in the league this year.

I think it's pretty obvious that Florida, Bama, and LSU are pretty regularly the class of the conference and the nation in defensive back talent.

According to the current standings, it's Florida by a landslide. I'm sure you agree with that wholeheartedly, correct?

Current articles?
Todd McShay is quoted in an article from less than a week ago. So, yes.

It's game 2, conference play has barely started for these teams.
Your roll, slow it - at least until more data becomes available.

I think I'd like to see Florida play a passing offense with a pulse first. I have however watched Alabama play against USC and Western Kentucky, and I've seen LSU play Wisconsin and Jacksonville State. Anyone that has watched those 4 games can't tell me with a straight face that LSU has a better secondary than Alabama. They tackle like shite and give up big plays. I've seen it with my own eyes. LSU is behind Alabama in 2016

Ah, he good ol' eye ball test. Solid argument.

At this point I see nothing wrong with those opinions.
In regards to LSU:
CB
-white is playing as well as anyone in the country IMO
-toliver hasn't done anything wrong necessarily, has given up some underneath throws. The talent is there and he could end up as another shutdown corner but I can't argue he is yet.
-Jackson has looked great in man coverage, has great ball skills and is as fast as they come. Has looked lost in zone coverage sometimes leading to a few busted plays. When he is comfortable he will be incredible.
S
-Adams hasn't made the wow plays of last year yet, but he is as good as any safety in the country IMO.
-Jefferson is a solid run support safety, knock on him is coverage. He is solid IMO, sometimes plays the flight path rather than the receivers hands (point they will meet) when the ball is in the air leading to completions and YAC.
-Battle is the key here for passing situations. Looks to be a great coverage safety with great length and range. Need to see a little more of him against top competition.
I'm convinced White, Toliver, Jackson, and Adams will all be high draft picks and long time NFL players (4 of our top 6).
Jefferson and battle we will see.
After the above mentioned six we are stocked full of 5 stars and top 100 talents out of highschool just like Alabama. The secondary is a position group we recruit just as well as them on paper.
I think by mid season this secondary will be playing as good as any in the nation. Alabama and Florida have excellent secondaries as well.
Our current 14 scholarship secondary players as recruits, in order of playing time:
-95 avg rating for all 14 scholarship players on 247composite.
-Over half (8) were in the top half of the top 100 overall players on the 247composite.
