Arkies, please explain how we are the reason you are called Razorbacks

In a reddit subject discussing LSU this season, an Arkansas fan chimed in with this:
I do pride myself on knowing at least some college football history, especially as it pertains to LSU, but I had never heard anything about this. What is this Hog fan talking about? Did LSU really have something to do with Razorbacks being your nickname?

I think I just feel a little confused about how A&M came in and was suddenly a much bigger rival than us without even batting an eye. I understand there is history between A&M and LSU along with Houston being a large market for both schools, but Arkansas and LSU go way back too. Hell, y'all are the reason we're called the Razorbacks.

We beat yall. Famous coach Hugo Bezdek said we played like a band of wild Razorbacks. Razorbacks had been associated with the state before then as well so it stuck

Pretty sure they were the cardinals before they were the razorbacks. Definitely one of the most unique mascot choices

Arkansas's athletic teams weren't always known as the Razorbacks. From 1894 until 1910, the football team was known as the Cardinals, a reference to the deep shade of red that the student body voted the school's official color—over heliotrope—in 1895. Upon returning to Little Rock after Arkansas's 1909 team capped off an undefeated season with a 1609 win at rival LSU, head coach Hugo Bezdek announced to the crowd of cheering students that his team had played "like a wild band of Razorback hogs." The Razorback, a wild boar known for its fighting ability, was adopted as the school's mascot the following year.

Interesting story. I Googled Hugo Bezdek Razorbacks and also found this from Hog Database...
TL;DR version--Arky baseball and football teams were called Razorbacks in two newspaper articles prior to Bezdek's famous reference following the 1909 LSU game
True or not, I do like that Arkansas attributes it to the 1909 LSU game.

Wow, it would have been awesome if that vote had gone the other way. I bet they never would have changed it to Razorbacks...could there be any better or more unique nickname than the Heliotropes? I would root for them just so I could say the name a lot.

that's the story I've always heard as well.... although for some reason I was thinking it was a game against Texas and not LSU... don't know where I got that from though.

That's pretty cool and it cemented LSU as Arky's biggest rival for all time.

It started in a game against LSU, based on how WE played.
