How do you feel about your defense next season? Seems like you are taking a pretty big hit losing Philon, Flowers and Spaight. Do you feel comfortable with the guys you have replacing them to think the defense will remain in the upper echelon of the league? Do you also lose a few guys in the secondary?

Overall thoughts on the 2015 defense?

Losing the "bermuda triangle" of Spaight, Flowers and Philon isnt fun but honestly I love where we are. Before this year we knew Flowers was good but Philon and Spaight came out of nowhere. Bert has built up some pretty good depth on defense with some sick athletes, and we locked up our magician of a DC so I'm not worried at all.

As for losing anybody in the secondary, not really. We lost a starting safety and our nickel back but all year, their younger backups played better than they did.

We recruited the areas of need quite well, we should be pretty stout again.

Froholdt will play some immediately, and guys like Bijhon Jackson will replace Philon and hopefully not lose much ground there, he was the top in state player last year and got quite a bit of PT last year partly in case Philon did go pro. He's gonna be a great one. Froholdt too.

Looking forward to our game in Tuscaloosa. Really like Bert as a coach.

I went to the Bama game in TTown in I believe it was 2011, great trip despite the blowout.

Philon should've stayed for one more season. He was just really blowing up.

I have a feeling Bijhon is going to do the same this year.

You don't lose a Flowers, Philon and Spaight and get better, at least not right away.
If some of the youngsters that got their feet wet this past season step up, we should have a pretty good defense though.
Winston and Wise at DE will make some noise, it's their time to shine. Bijohn Jackson could make a move at DT now that he has a year under his belt.
LB still has some questions, but we've got some good young talent there. Ellis will be our bell cow at LB most likely.
Secondary should be better. A couple of the true freshmen could see the field, both with good size and speed - Dalton and Pulley.
I think after a few non-conf games the defense should be gelling pretty good.

To be honest, I don't what to expect. What I can tell you is that you named some big losses, but we probably have better depth on defense then we've had in a long time. That coupled with finally having a good DC, which has been our biggest problem for years now, has me feeling pretty good, though.

I'll go on record as saying I think we'll have an upper-tier SEC defense, but I'm not sure after that.

We will have more depth at LB, over all.

If Spaight and Flowers passed their work ethic off the field (in the weight/film rooms) to the players coming back, we could have a top 10 defense...

If Robb Smith hadn't shown himself to be a wizard this past season I would be more worried

I went to the 1993 game, also a blowout, and spent the second half just walking around the stadium. Until I looked it up on Wiki I didn't realize the win was vacated.

As for the defense it was the pleasant surprise this year especially after last year and I think they are solid enough overall as a unit to be comparable to what they were this past season.
