ARKANSAS TO ICE DIII TEAM, PURSUE FIFTH SECHC CROWN
Arkansas will have an ACHA Division III team this season -- in addition to the new, eagerly anticipated DI squad -- after all.
The club announced a 30-game schedule for 2015-16 today that it hopes will result in yet another South Eastern Collegiate Hockey Conference championship and a trip to the ACHA DIII regional tournament. The Razorbacks have won four of the last five SECHC titles and have qualified for nationals three times in their seven years in the ACHA.
When it revealed plans for a DI team last winter, Arkansas was not planning to have a DIII squad. But the strong interest in Razorbacks hockey by prospective players since then prompted the Hogs to go with two teams.
Brian Gallini, head coach of the DI squad, said 46 players have committed to playing hockey at Arkansas next season and another four are considering joining the Razorbacks’ program.
The DIII team will play the requisite seven SECHC regular-season games, meeting Louisiana State, Vanderbilt and Ole Miss twice and Mississippi State once -- all before the semester break. In fact, the DIII Razorbacks will play only seven games after the first of the year.
Summary: Arkansas will dominate on the D1 level with the big boys and over the lesser SEC teams in DIII.
