I just saw a tweet that showed these stats:
quote:

2015 carries - NFL
1) Peterson 327
2) Martin 288
3) L Murray 266

2015 carries - NCAA
1) Henry 395
2) McCaffrey 337
5) Fournette 300
7) Elliott 289

That's significantly more carries and in 5-6 less games in most cases.

Is this a player safety issue that we on the SECr need to address or what?

Peterson- 31 yrs old
Martin- 27 yrs old
Murray- 28 yrs old

Henry- 21 yrs old
McCaffrey- 20 yrs old
Fournette -20 yrs old
Elliot- 21 yrs old

NFL QBs > College QBs
NFL defenders > College defenders

Edit:

-Majority of D1 colleges play 13 games a season. 12 + bowl (if .500, including non FBS Ws)
- Majority of NFL teams play 16, though preseason touches probably equate to a 17th games worth of touches. The guys you mentioned won't get many preseason carries though

I don't think there's any debate that college teams use primary RBs way more than the NFL uses theirs.

That said, the numbers are misleading. NFL RB carries don't include the post season; CFB stats do.

Now, Henry still trumps everyone on that list, but Peterson had 350 carries if you include his playoff game. That places him ahead of McCaffrey.

Lots of RB by committee, and lots more passing in the NFL than in CFB.

And probably (guessing on this) fewer plays over all per game. With the way the clock works in the NFL, I don't think teams are running the same amount of plays the some of the colleges are running.

I state this with zero research to back up that claim, so I could be completely wrong.

If Fournette was smart he would have just sat this year out.

The average College hit isn't quite the same as the average NFL hit, although the SEC isn't far off.

Guice is a stud. He will get more carries this year than last.

Nope, too much emphasis will be put on LF and the Heisman. Can't have fewer carries and the trophy.

Based on?
He had 300 last year with an anemic passing attack. Why would you think he would get more carries this year?

its easy saying Alabama and LSU overuse their running backs coming from a team that hasn't had a 1,000 yard rusher in a decade. Throwing the ball 50 times also has its dangers as well to wide receivers taking defenseless hits.

Anomaly at the college level. Tandems had been the rage lately. Alabama had employed it well, until transfers and injuries forced the need of Henry carrying the load.

Do you even watch football? Anyone who does would know automatically that the NFL is a passing league where the NCAA is not.

I'm guessing this is a joke thread, but check out the top 20 career rushers in NFL history and their carries in college. A lot of them carried the ball either a lot throughout their college career, or a lot in the year or two they actually started.

1. Emmitt Smith 1989 - 11 games 284 carries
3. Barry Sanders 1988 - 11 games 344 carries
5. LaDainian Tomlinson 1999-2000 - 12 games 309 carries, 11 games 369 carries (943 career carries)
7. Eric Dickerson 1981 - 11 games 255 carries (23.2 carries per game = 301 carries in 13 games)
8. Tony Dorsett 1973, 1976 - 12 games 318 carries, 12 games 370 carries, 1163 career college carries
10. Marshall Faulk 1992-1993 - 11 games 265 carries (24 cpg = 313.2 carries in 13 games), 12 games 300 carries (766 carries 3 years)
12. Marcus Allen 1980-1981 - 11 games 354 carries, 12 games 433 carries, (932 career carries)
14. Thurman Thomas 1985, 1987 - 12 games 327 carries, 11 games 251 carries (22.8 cpg = 296.6 carries in 13 games) 956 carries in career

That's 8 of the top 14 career rushers and to round out the top 20, you also had Corey Dillon at 271 carries in 11 games, Adrian Peterson with 339 carries in 13 games, and Steven Jackson with 319 and 350 carries in back to back 13 game seasons.

Alabama does not overuse their backs. In fact Fournette will leave LSU with perhaps 150+ more carries than Henry.

Team that had back with most carries, LSU/Bama

2015: Alabama (Henry)
2014: Alabama (Yeldon)
2013: Alabama (Yeldon)
2012: Alabama (Lacy)
2011: Alabama (Richardson)
2010: LSU (Ridley)
2009: Alabama (Ingram)
2008: Alabama (Coffee)
2007: LSU (Hester)

Not saying Bama overuses their backs, but if they don't certainly LSU doesn't either.

Also for those that think fournette might have been overworked last year...
Not only did Henry averaged 1 more carry per game, but was also 62% of alabamas carries compared to 59% of LSUs for fournette

There are several things in play:
1) NFL games have fewer plays with the running clock
2) College teams run with their primary back more, NFL teams split carries more
3) the NFL is more of a passing league than college
