The guys who slurred so badly either due to accent or liquor that you couldn't understand 2/3 of what they were saying?

Pat Dye, Gene Stallings, Steve Spurrier, Johnny Majors, Jackie Sherrill, Frank Broyles, Danny Ford, Bear Bryant, Vince Dooley, Ray Goff, etc.

I love the current SEC and how amazing the players and games are, but sometimes I miss the days when it was a regional conference with regional figures and regional appeal. The league still has a few characters (Spurrier and Miles) but for the most part all the soul has been sucked out by the corporate nationalization of the league and CFB as a whole.

Solid counter, but Texas is as close regionally as we can get without being southern.

Or something.

No counter. All in jest. Texas is a land of many a places and people of which many of the settlers who were not first generation immigrants were of southern descent. Hence why you get the argument even within the state of "Texas is Texas" vs "Texas is in the south". My ancestors all came to Texas via Virginia, Louisiana, and Germany so there you have it.

But it's not in The South. As in the deep south. To be fair neither is florida.

When Danny Ford was coaching the Hogs he told a local reporter covering practice that his favorite perk as head coach was free chewing tabacco.

I remember riding home from an Alabama game in the mid 1990s listening to the Auburn pregame for a night game. They talked to Coach Dye and he told them "I'm having a great time up here sippin on a beverage in the luxxxxry sweeeets"

It was hysterical. Just don't get characters like that anymore.

I remember the Vince Dooley show and he would always talk up the next team we were playing. We would be playing some cupcake and Dooley would say "Well we got Savannah School for the Blind next Saturday and they have a real good offensive line."

The internet, social media, the 24/7 news cycle, they've changed a lot of things, including how a head coach has to look and sound.

Curley Hallman could drink all of them combined under the table.
