Watching Jarret Lee develop quicker than I anticipated set me to wondering if there has ever been a starting freshman QB that won the National Championship...or even an SEC championship? The fairly successful debut seasons of Chris Leak at FLA and Stafford at GA are two of the most successful I can remember. Have there been better ones?

Bernie Kosar and Jamelle Holieway (took over for Troy Aikman on the 85 Sooners, FWIW).

I don't know about a freshman winning the SEC, though.

Good memory there Muppet, I had forgotten about those. I knew the list would be short.

I do think Jarrett Lee has a better shot than most freshmen who have attempted the feat, not because he has more talent than others who have tried...but few freshmen have had the luck to be surrounded by such a complete team in all other areas.

LSU has as complete a team as there is in the country and only lacks an experienced talented QB to be on par talent wise with USC and Oklahoma. Those are the only other teams that I belive has talent equal to ours in their top 30 players.

Well, both of the guys I mentioned were true freshman (and I'm not old enough to remember; I've just been reading a lot of CFB trivia lately. ).

Well I AM old enough to remember unfortunately, and I can't believe I forgot about one of our own. If memory serves in 1986 LSU had a redshirt freshman named Tommy Hodson and we went 5-1 in the conference and I believe tied for the SEC championship in the days before there were two divisions. His must be one of the top 3 debuts in SEC history.

I wasn't saying he WILL win a championship as a freshman, I was just speculating on what the odds of such a feat might be by comparing it against college football history.

I only said they were successful when compared to the debuts of other freshmen QB's in the SEC.

He got injured playing for the Sooners in '85 and transfered to UCLA the next year, I believe.

Aikman, who had been six of eight passing for 131 yards, would be lost for the season. Switzer and offensive coordinator Jim Donnan were forced to switch back to the wishbone offense under freshman quarterback Jamelle Holieway. The team went on to win the 1985 National Championship by beating Penn State in the 1986 Orange Bowl. With Holieway established as the starting quarterback at OU, Aikman decided to transfer to UCLA.
